San Francisco based Dubs Alive records comes with their second release again featuring the use of live instruments in dubstep. This one has a jazzy feel with tracks from DLX and Merlow featuring Giuliano Pizzulo on the electric bass. Anyone who’s seen Rusko’s live performance with resampled electric bass and drum loops should take note – dubstep with live instruments is not to be dismissed.

DLX from Los Angeles showcases his excellent snare construction with drums that hit harder than mid-90s jungle and a mutilated vocal sample that reminds me of “Here Comes the Hotstepper.” Mellow track overall, something to vibe to.

Merlow (no, not Marlow) also from LA comes with a different style on the second track with grimy effected out bass and a plethora of percussion layers. The lead synth and percussive nature of the track takes me back to some old Squarepusher, notably Hard Normal Daddy.
