DJ Solo – Crush.Kill.Destroy (dubstep turntablism!)

DJ Solo of the Soul Assassins crew (DJ Muggs, Cypress Hill, GZA, etc) down in LA comes with this uniquely styled mixtape in dubstep circles with transitions of cutting and scratching rather than blending.  It fits with the music though cause most of these tunes are intense club riddims that are all about the drop and he cuts straight into it.  Different style, give it a listen.  Hiphop heads will be familiar.  I think it’s damn hype.  Blending of mixing styles like this is exactly what happens when people that like different sorts of music get together and vibe over, well, the music.  Bigup to DJ Solo & the rest of the crew.

As Solo puts it “It’s not the newest, most exclusive tracks, just some hard, bangin beats that get me hype and ready to CRUSH.KILL.DESTROY!“  I gotta agree, strictly heat inside even if some of it is dated, but there are also some Solo blends that spice things up.  Excellent selections regardless of age, put this on in your car when you’re heading to the club. Quick mixing on this too with 30 tracks in 50 minutes. Did I mention hype?

Check the tracklist below and scope out the crew’s site.  Download the mix here.

DJ Solo also did a dubstep edition of his series 40’s and Blunts with 6blocc, Woes, and Darklord of La Dubstep Nostra.  Pretty sick show including live high-grade scratching with dubstep.  I think this is even more dope than the studio mix:

Jahdan Blakkamoore – Buzzrock Warrior

Vocal prowess, innovative and excellent production, top notch guest MCs and a diversity of styles makes this album one of the tops of the year for me.  It came out two weeks ago now on Gold Dust and I’ve been dying to write about it but things just stacked up, you know.  Featured on vocals is obviously Jahdan Blakkamoore with appeareances from Durrty Goodz (if you slept on his 2009 album get it NOW), 77Klash, and Abena Koomson.  Production comes mostly from Dutty Artz members DJ /Rupture and Matt Shadetek who have generated a stunning diversity of sound from the medieval ’step of ‘Get Hustlin‘ to the bhangra-esque beat on ‘Lets Go‘ and the dancehall feel of ‘Dem a Idiot‘.  Production is tops.  My one complaint is the strong use of autotune on this, but in some circumstances it adds to the vibe.  Personal preference I guess, been hearing a lot of that floating around lately (or maybe I’ve been listening to too much Mavado).

Samples of my picks off the album below, pick it up at the usual places.  Also some free tunes from Jahdan thanks to XLR8R here and here.

Filthy Digital – Testimonial LP (Tribute to Mike Honcho)

Out this week on Denver, CO based Filthy Digital is this Testimonial LP featuring intense dubstep cuts from ten producers.  This LP is quite special because as the name implies all the proceeds of the release go to benefit the family of former label exec Mike Honcho who recently passed.  While I never knew Mike by all accounts his presence was central to dubstep in the US and especially Colorado.

To promote this release and the label in general the new heads Dub-A-Tak and Chefugee have started a twitter promotion.  If you retweet the message “Filthy_digital presents:Testimonial LP –OUT NOW http://bit.ly/OOlGD#digitaltunes” (click here to retweet) then you’re entered in a contest to win a free copy of the LP.  It ends this Saturday so get on it!

Big tunes on this one from Rumblejunkie, Caustik, Richie August and many more.  Lovers of the filthy side of dubstep (hence the labelname) from people like Borgore, 16 bit, DZ, Chasing Shadows, and related should get after this asap.

Dubstepped Radio Episode 004

Dubstepped Radio
Yes yes, it’s the fourth episode of Dubstepped Radio.  I had to take a bit of a hiatus making them but we’re back in action.  This one’s heavily vocal with the talents of Jahdan Blakkamoore, Winstrong, Sky-I, MC Zulu, Rankin Scroo, DJ Collage, Jammer and Badness on the mic.  It starts off with some 2steppy rhythms by a trio of Texas producers and then moves into some synthy futuristic ’step from KidLogic and Zeno, a vocal bashment session, some club rhythms and a reggaeish outro.  Big!
