Marcus Visionary comes with a different ting on the “Carib EP” out soon on Liondub International. Included are three new bits and three tracks that are out on various singles. This EP is a preview of what will be out on the longer, 23 track Carib LP out late this November. The three released tracks (“The General” remix, “Black Panther”, and “In the VIP” out friday) are definitely worth a listen if you haven’t heard them yet. “In the VIP” is when the so-called Sub-Soca flex comes in with whistles and a 4×4 beat under some growly dubsteppy synths.
This Sub-Soca style (first heard for me on the “Mama So Divine” remix) brings a whole new sound to the table. Toronto’s Marcus Visionary has perfected it with the release of the Carib EP, likely to be expanded on the Carib LP. “Left Foot Skank” has a nice, early dubstep-era wobble over a syncopated beat, but the shining track of the EP for me is “St. Vincent” when the wobble is thrown to the wind and replaced by upbeat claps, whistles, and cowbells. Something about upbeat percussion always grabs me and I’m bubblin as I write. Dancefloor in a club with this tune on is gonna be mobbed. The third new entry is a collaboration on the roots dubstep tip with legendary vocalist Johnny Osbourne and production help from Liondub, feelin this one as well.
