Distal – March Studio Mix

Distal - March Studio MixDistal is always pushing the boundaries of sounds people use from synthesizers (and samples) and consequently this mix is almost opposite to the sounds in the recent mix from The Spit Brothers.  Alien noises will keep your mind wandering over dance-inducing rhythms.  Definitely loads of big tracks inside this mix.  Look out for Distal come 2010, already with 3 releases out on Rogue Dubs, Car Crash Set and Embassy.  Distance recently dropped his tune “Space Graffiti” on Rinse.FM, Julio Bashmore featured “Notlanta” on his mix for Mary Anne Hobbs, and other like-minded selectors have been pushing this sound.  Futurism.

If you want more info on Distal, check out interviews from me and over at bassfaced.

The Spit Brothers mix it up for 2010

Bakir & Dubsworth form The Spit Brothers, a duo based in San Francisco focusing on the use of live instruments in bass music who just put out a mix for 2010 that has more exclusives than a Washington DC dinner party.  The two are prolific and write excellent music using Dubsworth’s guitar skills & Bakir’s various talents on instruments like the clavinet, trumpet, flugelhorn, and keys.  Oh, and also bass.  Lots of bass.  Highlights on this come from their own label Dubs Alive along with releases on Brap Dem, Full Melt and Sub Life.  Lots of the tracks on this are slated for release on a Spit Brothers full-length album coming sometime in the future so keep your eyes out for that one.

This music draws from all sounds: synthesizers, samples, instruments, vocals, pretty much anything.  For your eardrums.  Click the arrow on the widget below to download this one.

Tonight I’m gonna produce like its 2999

Aliens.  Robots.  Lasers.  It’s the year 2999: who are you on the dancefloor with?  Peppermill Records have started a competition to produce dance music for 1000 years in the future inspired by the above painting.  Dubstep or related sounds seem to fit the description of the contest quite well, so if you think you’ve got what it takes head over to the competition page to check out more details.  Producers involved so far include Kid606, Dntel of Postal Service fame, Mochipet, Cardopusher, High Rankin, Stagga and more, so victors from this will be among seriously well-known electronic artists.

It’s the year 2999, and what you see above is your future.   What exactly is going on?  Your job is to soundtrack the above painting by celebrated futurist David Schleinkofer and write a short description of your vision.

This open competition is for a spot on a big upcoming Peppermill release, the chosen piece will be featured alongside many of the most talented forward-thinking electronic musicians around.  Their works will be interpreted by illustrators while you’ll be doing the exact opposite.

What we’re putting together is a futuristic dance album, as the title is a play on the phrase “dance like it’s 1999″.  However this doesn’t have to sound like anything humans currently groove to, in fact we encourage you to paint way, way outside the lines.

Bass is necessary though.  Deep, deep sub bass.  This collection is going to feature songs using a very full range of frequencies, and experimentation with the lower end of the spectrum is a must.

When completed it’ll be freely downloadable under a Creative Commons license, as all our releases are, which means people are encouraged to share the music but aren’t allowed to alter it in any way or use it for commercial purposes without your consent.

- interpret the painting above
- the result should be ready to be played on dancefloors 989 years from now
- use a rich range of frequencies including sub-bass
- the title should be fairly descriptive, as the painting and the song are to be a combo
- include a paragraph-long summary of your vision
