Different 140 BPM styles from Sunglasses and M.I. Loki

I’m always trying to explore new sorts of music.  This has always been the most interesting music to me, the leading edge, the new new.  Today I’ve got a couple videos that are totally off in space, not sure what this music even is or if I care to label it something.  These tunes are all near 140bpm, pretty bass heavy and electronic so I thought it’s worth seeing what people think.

First up, coming from Savannah, GA is Sunglasses with the tune “Whiplash.”  The video is really whimsical and definitely makes me chuckle.  This is the first in a new direction for Sunglasses, so if you’re feeling it let them know at their myspace or over at the dubstepforum.

The second tune comes from M.I. Loki out of Sheffield, UK who mutates the Temptations “Just My Imagination” into something completely different.  Again, not even sure what this music is.  It’s like Sean Kingston vs Vex’d.  Really catchy beat on this one, and the video is damn well produced.  Check it out, and hit up M.I. Loki at Myspace or Facebook.

Severe earthquake strikes Haiti - Please consider donating money

I never write about political things on this blog but there are some events that are of such significance that they are exceptions.  The recent earthquake in Haiti is an example of this, something which transgresses regional, national, or partisan political boundaries and demands urgent action.  I will not use this blog as a platform to campaign for any particular ideology, but natural disasters of this severity command my attention and support.

As many of you know, last night Haiti was struck by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter about ten miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, the capital city.  This earthquake is the largest in Haiti in over 200 years.  Haiti has always been fragile politically and economically and this disaster may be too severe for the infrastructure of the country to deal with.  A number of calls for international aid have been made, and I encourage you to consider if you can part with a small amount of money ($10, 25, 50 dollars) to contribute to the Red Cross’s (or others) efforts in the area.  Note that many of these donations are tax deductible.

Organizations in need of help:

The UN’s World Food Programme (already dispatched in Haiti)

A White House Press Release on the topic (including links to the Red Cross):

Doctors Without Borders

The Haiti Emergency Relief Fund

I won’t belabor this point with any of the incredibly shocking images circulating about the internet, but consider the map below showing affected populations.  There are over 2 million people within 20 km of the epicenter, a large fraction of which are now homeless, injured, or both.

Also consider this quote from the President of Haiti:

“Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed.
Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed.”
— President René Préval of Haiti

Now more than ever is an excellent time to donate to aid organizations.

Shortstack in the area

It’s been 10 months since I started Dubstepped it’s been a hell of a lot of fun.  Now for some growth.  I’m ridiculously happy to welcome the addition of a new writer, DJ Shortstack (Heat Promotions) out of Atlanta.  Shortstack brings a second perspective on dubstep and trust me when I say that he’s got some big posts coming up here.  Catch him playing out in the Atlanta area and other spots.

Shortstack recently recorded a set he played at Tuff Tuesdays in Atlanta, this is probably the best introduction I could give:

Holiday Bass Presents - Eleven Free Downloads

MusicI thought I’d hand out a bunch of treats for the holidays and new year that have been coming from all over the place.  All manner of dubstep and related music here.  Along with all the tracks in this post if you click the image it will take you to the “free tunes” tag, which is every post I’ve ever made with free music associated.  Get after that!  Mad respect to all people that put out tunes for free.

These two from Knowa KnowOne of the Muti music family are a taste of what’s to come from a new EP he’s putting out on 1320 early next year.  This is a new direction in dubstep with a little faster tempo and synths that harken back to the g-funk hiphop era.  Feeling these.

Knowa KnowOne ft Sleepyhead - Killa Tune

Drake & Lil Wayne - Forever (Knowa KnowOne’s Thugstep Remix)

Next up we have more in the thugstep or hiphop remix vein from DJ Solo of the Soul Assassins crew, with first an entire pack of remixes he’s done.  This is a compilation of unmixed tunes, not all dubstep, but some serious jams inside.  Solo was kind enough to include two more mashups/remixes including MIA and the “first ever Polka-step track.”  Get on it!

DJ Solo - My MPC Is a Pipe Bomb (compilation)

Boys In The Basement (DJ SOLO RMX) - DJ SOLO x Reso x MIA

Kiss Me I’m Polish (DJ SOLO REMIX) - DJ SOLO

Along with all this thugstep I should definitely mention this recent mixtape from DJ Cable @ Rock the Dub that’s tops as far as this hiphop dubstep crossover goes.  Definitely get this one in your ears.

DJ Cable x Rock The Dub Fuck Thugstep Vol. 1

Now for some jazzy, 2steppy vibes from Cosmic Revenge in the form of an older tune that he’s put out for free.  Shuffly beats, deep basslines, and a nice sax riff make this one a big tune.

Cosmic Revenge - On The Block

Along similar lines I have to mention the Soundcloud of this cat Materielle from Urbana, Il where you can get no less than 8 tracks for free.  These highly recommended for fans of dark, minimal garage a la Burial, Kode9 and such.  I’m just going to link to his entire soundcloud, tons of free bits inside.

Materielle on Soundcloud

Now steppin in the harder direction with a free tune from Roommate and El Diablo out thanks to MalLabel.  Roommate just put out the Strong Vibes EP on MalLabel which you can grab here.  This is a five track release and MalLabel is putting out the El Diablo remix for free… freemix?

Roommate - Strong Vibes (El Diablo Remix)

Now for some futuristic sounds from Misk and Polyshufflez thanks to Big Up’s Dubs Friday series.  I don’t post most of the free tunes they put out, but am including this one to make sure people know about the quality releases that they send out every Friday.  Check these:

Big Up Dubs Friday (12/18 edition)

And the last one that I’m going to include is a bit older (all the way from the end of November oh my…) but something that I slept on.  This one, Dubsworth vs Bakir (aka the Spit Brothers) with a remix by DZ put out free thanks to Badman Press.  Scope the link with full info on all producers involved here, along with links to free Wav and MP3 downloads.

Dubsworth ft Bakir - Not the One (incl DZ Remix)

And that’s gonna do it for the free tunes for now!!!  Happy Holidays & New Year to everyone.  Look forward to the new year!!

Dhyan Møller - Quirkey Remixes EP on Blipswitch

Quirkey Donkey RemixesOut tomorrow on Blipswitch recordings is this three track remix EP by diverse artists DJG, Mossmoss, and Metaphase.  I’ve been playing the DJG and Metaphase remixes and the Mossmoss is equally nice.  Blipswitch compares this one to the Coalition of the Killing remix EP they put out a while ago which is definitely appropriate.  Both are packed with quality tracks remixed in diverse styles by excellent producers.

Dhyan Møller - Lost in 3’s (DJG Remix)

DJG sets this one off with a deeper dubstep remix of the tune Lost in 3’s.  DJG included this one in his set for Mary Anne Hobbs a while ago, it caught my ears and has been stuck since, big remix.

Dhyan Møller - Quirkey Donkey (Mossmoss Remix)

Mossmoss stays more true to the original on his take of Quirkey Donkey, dubby techno sounds with playful synths. Feeling this remix definitely.

Dhyan Møller - Quirkey Donkey (Metaphase Remix)

Keeping only select elements of the source material and spicing it up with a wobble Metaphase comes with a more in your face dubstep version of Quirkey Donkey.  Strong bass helps round out the tune keeping the midrange in check, very nice remix.

NastyNasty - The Reef and Haterade with Slugabed Remix

NastyNasty - The ReefNastyNasty comes with some futuristic laser music with this new release on Frite Nite including a huge remix by Slugabed.  Slugabed and NastyNasty along with Kid Simple, Zeno, Starkey, and a select few others have been producing this new sound that I can only attempt to describe as synth hiphop, Starkey calls it Street Bass, and I’m completely taken by it.  This release has three flavors, the 142bpm dubstep-compatible “The Reef”, a hiphop tempo remix by Slugabed, and a dancehall/house tempo entry with “Haterade”.  Definitely no haterade consumption personally, I’m enamored with all three tunes.  In your ears, instant:

There’s a lot of this sound coming from Starkey and Dev79, like In Ya Face, the Try Humanity Remix, the Freeze Step remix, and BD1982’s Space Boots along with anything on Starkey & Dev79’s label Seclusiasis.  Love these all.  Check a full interview with them in XLR8R.

If you’re in the SF bay area make sure to catch NastyNasty this Friday with Joker & Nomad, gonna be a big one.  More to come on that soon…
