This site is focused on reviews of new music coming out, events in the SF area, and my podcast. Because of this I can't keep up with the huge amount of mixes that come out so I'm going to put links to people that do an excellent job:

Distal - March Studio Mix

Distal - March Studio MixDistal is always pushing the boundaries of sounds people use from synthesizers (and samples) and consequently this mix is almost opposite to the sounds in the recent mix from The Spit Brothers.  Alien noises will keep your mind wandering over dance-inducing rhythms.  Definitely loads of big tracks inside this mix.  Look out for Distal come 2010, already with 3 releases out on Rogue Dubs, Car Crash Set and Embassy.  Distance recently dropped his tune “Space Graffiti” on Rinse.FM, Julio Bashmore featured “Notlanta” on his mix for Mary Anne Hobbs, and other like-minded selectors have been pushing this sound.  Futurism.

If you want more info on Distal, check out interviews from me and over at bassfaced.

The Spit Brothers mix it up for 2010

Bakir & Dubsworth form The Spit Brothers, a duo based in San Francisco focusing on the use of live instruments in bass music who just put out a mix for 2010 that has more exclusives than a Washington DC dinner party.  The two are prolific and write excellent music using Dubsworth’s guitar skills & Bakir’s various talents on instruments like the clavinet, trumpet, flugelhorn, and keys.  Oh, and also bass.  Lots of bass.  Highlights on this come from their own label Dubs Alive along with releases on Brap Dem, Full Melt and Sub Life.  Lots of the tracks on this are slated for release on a Spit Brothers full-length album coming sometime in the future so keep your eyes out for that one.

This music draws from all sounds: synthesizers, samples, instruments, vocals, pretty much anything.  For your eardrums.  Click the arrow on the widget below to download this one.

Praveen - Lovestep Volume 2

The last entry for Valentine’s Day and probably my favorite of the three, though Sines’ mix is damn good also, comes from Praveen (Percussion Lab, Sepalcure).  I’ve got more info on Sepalcure coming soon, and some of their tracks featured tomorrow on my Dubstep.FM radio show, but until then get to know about this sound - lovestep.  This mix is the second foray into this sound from Praveen and he executes it like a pro with this mix, selections are just excellent.  Check out the tracklist here, and visit Percussion Lab for streaming & download of the set.  Keep a lookout for Sepalcure also.

Download via Percussion Lab.

Also, I gotta say, both Praveen and Starkey are talkin about Lovestep/Luvstep, but only Kells really knows:

Dirty South Joe and Flufftronix present Luvstep

The 57th episode of Mad Decent Worldwide Radio comes from Dirty South Joe and Flufftronix who have put together a wobbly, but emotional, entry for your Valentine’s Day.  Intro words in this come from Starkey who talks a little bit about “Luvstep” and who is also featured in the mix.  Cosmic Revenge on this one too, the track Late Nights is definitely deadly.  Big tunes inside from 2000F & JKamata, RX on a remix thing, a now-classic Mala tune, and an absolutely huge remix of Florence and the Machine by The XX.  Outro is maybe the biggest tune of 2009 - Hyph Mngo.  This is probably the heaviest of the three I’ll put up today - get your wobble on.

The intro from Starkey is worth listening to for anyone that’s into dubstep, it’s a brief history lesson and some candid commentary on the state of the music.  I can’t agree with him more, while I’m guided by dubstep in mixes I put together and things I put on this site, I’m more concerned with whether or not something is good music than whether or not it’s “dubstep.”

Sines - Sonic Love Cycle

Valentine’s day is a buzz with new sounds.  Mixes with titles about love and producers from the deeper side of dubstep are popping up all over.  I’d like to highlight three here today, the first from Sines of Formant Recordings.  This mix isn’t strictly positive tunes per se, but an attempt by Sines to capture all emotions associated with love, some of which aren’t necessarily happy.  The sounds inside this mix are the new new, with big representation from VVV (look out for this man 2010), and heat from Deadboy, Roska, Cosmic Revenge, FBOM, and Cooly G.

Head over to Formant Recordings to show some love and download this one.

Speaking With Sonkin

Recently, I caught up with Sonkin, a long time DJ working closely with the Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey imprints gas recently started putting out some new styles. Check it out as he’s been kind enough to provide is with a short Q&A, a hefty mix for your Super Bowl Sunday, and clips from his new single. Hell yes to a man who puts Minimalistix in his mixtapes, I was just lamenting the other day that I don’t hear it as much as I’d like! Definitely keep an eye and an ear out for Sonkin in 2010, and don’t forget about his latest release Saturn on the Bass Wars EP from Atlanta’s Abstract Logic Recordings.

Check the mix, and tracklist below the fold!

ss: First things first, tell us a bit about where you are from, your label and current projects.

Sonkin: I’m grew up in Tampa, Florida, and have lived in almost ever region of the country. I moved to Philadelphia 3 years ago. I work for and with Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey Records, both run by Dev79 and Starkey. You can expect quite a few releases this year on both labels from many exciting artists. (I know, really giving a lot away, eh?) Street Bass Anthems Volume 4 came out earlier this month. As for myself; I’m always working on tunes, have a few mixes on the way, and hopefully more releases this year… maybe even a vinyl release by the end of the year… In addition to playing out as much as possible. I would also really love to do some remix work this year.

ss: For those that don’t know you are a Florida native, who has since transplanted to Philly, both regions have a rich but individually unique musical history. Do you find you draw on influences from either? Tell us a bit on how you’ve developed the sound that listeners have become familiar with from you and the Slit Jockey camp.

Sonkin: grew up listening to a lot of metal and dirty south hip hop… I try to incorporate southern rap whenever I can. I think where someone lives or resides throughout their life definitely has a lasting impact on their music. I lived in LA for a bit prior to Philly, and basically discovered dubstep out there. When I lived in Orlando for college, I first got into drum n bass, bought my first set of turn tables, and started fucking around. I guess the rest is history. Part of the reason I was drawn to Seclusiasis and eventually made a member is my appreciation for urban music, in addition to bass heavy sounds, and the dance floor vibe. I could never really see myself playing anything that wouldn’t hold up in a club. Not to say I don’t enjoy listening to experimental music and what not in my spare time, just not really the sound I chose to define myself. At the same time, I don’t know if there is really any one sound I can chose to define myself as playing, haha. I like to see people dance and have fun… I hope my music can reflect that and not come across as overly angry or aurally assaulting. That would kinda suck, eh?

ss: Other than your release Saturn on the Bass Wars EP from ALR, what recently release have caught your attention the most?

Sonkin: I think Rwina has been killing it with eveything they’ve been putting out, period… Planet Mu also keeps chugging along… Starkey’s forthcoming full-length is ridiculous! I can’t stop listening to it! From what i’ve heard so far, I might go as far as to say that this will be the year of Kastle… just some amazing production from B. Rich! Kingdom is another producer/dj who has really caught my attention. He looks primed to annihilate shit in 2010. BD1982’s full length on Seclusiasis will present a fantastic and very different approach to dance music. Obviously, Numan and SDUK are both young guns with big tunes under their belts already… it’s scary to see how good they’ll get. So much good shit on the horizon!

ss: What can we expect in the future from Sonkin?

Sonkin: You can expect one full length, hopefully by the end of this year… maybe a single or two yielding from that. Perhaps an EP of collaborations with my man Rx, with whom I did “Saturn.” Looking to collaborate with Darrel Asbury (in progress), as well as Plastic Little dj/producer SiYoung Lee, Buddy Leezle and whatever other vocalists I can get down with on tracks. Eliot Lipp and I trade music and have talked about a potential collaboration. My goal is to convince Dev79 to find time in his busy schedule to work on a tune with me, so wish me luck, haha. Aside from that, I’m trying to increase my travel itinerary as much as possible… Doing a lot of shows in the next few months, which should lead to a busy summer on the festival circuit. Of course all of this still must permit time to chill with my 2 cats… they get temperamental when I’m on the road for too long.

Shortstack in the area

It’s been 10 months since I started Dubstepped it’s been a hell of a lot of fun.  Now for some growth.  I’m ridiculously happy to welcome the addition of a new writer, DJ Shortstack (Heat Promotions) out of Atlanta.  Shortstack brings a second perspective on dubstep and trust me when I say that he’s got some big posts coming up here.  Catch him playing out in the Atlanta area and other spots.

Shortstack recently recorded a set he played at Tuff Tuesdays in Atlanta, this is probably the best introduction I could give:
