Causecast Interview with Bassnectar on Music and Social Change

Causecast is a grassroots organizing online community for social change that also interviews musicians about nonstandard things like their stance on politics and social progression.  This time they linked up with Bassnectar in Austin, TX to talk about “Obama, the Internet, Bassnetwork, local activism, and what motivates him to impact social change.” See some video from the interview and a full transcript over on causecast.

Some excerpts:

I chose to use music as a way to gather attention and then be able to deliver energy towards the areas that I think are important in life, which would be education, health, family – basic principles that are lost in the inundated shuffle of stupid gossip macabre media stories, and pointless sidetrack political distraction ceremonies.

[T]he odds are daunting in the war between the serfs and the lords. There’s only a couple Lords, and they own everything, they control us all, and we’re all kind of stupid and living in the mud, and working for the Lords. And that’s still true today; it’s not really about nationalism, that’s kind of a disguise – it’s about corporatism.

This might inspire me to ask some off the wall questions in the future…

Dubstepped Radio Inaugural Episode

Dubstepped RadioI’ve started a new podcast focusing on fresh dubstep sounds coming out of the US and Canada and this is the first episode. This is not a standard DJ mix or something you’re going to want to throw on at your next party, this is more of a news or educational program about artists and labels that are doing big things. I introduce each track with a bit of info about the artist like tour dates, forthcoming or recent releases, labels they’ve worked with, and so on. This is why I call it a “radio show.” Hope you like it. I encourage feedback, hit me up by email to snf@dubstepped.net or snfdubstepped on aim.

I’m aiming for a monthly release of this show, so producers and labels send me tunes. I’m also looking for some graphic design help so if you want to design a better logo I’ll link to you and mention your site & name in the show.

I specifically try to play different styles on dubstep in each program. In this show you will hear wobbly club tunes, atmospheric deep dubstep, ragga influenced dubstep, and wobbly hiphop remixes. All about the diversity.

There are too many people to give thanks to but I have to highlight some:

SF family: DJG, Katya (Big Up Mag), Sam Supa, Miro, Bakir, J. Rogers, Rastatronics, Kush Arora, the Surya Dub, Surefire, Redline, and Full Melt crews, and last but definitely not least everyone nicing up the dance.

Inspiration: Rob Booth, Mary Anne Hobbs, Starkey, Joe Nice, and tons of dubstep.fm and rinse.fm DJs.

Also gotta bigup for sure dubway, the dubstep forum, and specifically the dubs section and the artists that post there. You gotta dig, but there’s some serious talent in them posts.

Bassnectar - Art of Revolution EP

Bassnectar Art of RevolutionToday I bring some samples of fresh Bassnectar material coinciding with the start of his US tour on 5/1. You can see the full dates of the tour here. He just released this EP which bears the same name as his tour consisting of title track “Art of Revolution” and a series of remixes from Diplo, Product 01, Ghislain Poirier, and 6blocc. This tune was also used in the recent Groove Armada mashup posted for download.

Bassnectar - Art of Revolution

First up is the original which is a serious wobbler asking “why we are afraid of revolution, man?”  I think this revolution is taking place on the dance floor though.  I love the intro drums on this, tons of fun blending them on top of other tunes.  This one large.

Art of Revolution (Diplo Remix)

Diplo minimizes the wobble and adds a bmore bass or baile rhythm, later bringing the wobble back in but pitched down into the bass.  Really like this remix.

Art of Revolution (6blocc Remix)

Junglist massive!  This tune could have been recorded in the height of jungle if the tempo were faster.  6blocc’s roots are evident.  The bassline in the intro takes me straight back to classic tunes like DJ Zinc’s Fugees or Not whitelabel.  I love the way the intro bubbly bassline morphs into the wobble from the Bassnectar original.  BIG remix!

This is available via the Bassnectar store currently and will be released on iTunes, Beatport, and other e-music retailers on May 12th.

Bassnectar - Bassnectar’s Superstylin Smashup

BassnectarI’m happy to post three sets of free tunes today, the first coming from San Francisco basswise badman Bassnectar. He also recently handed out his Kingston Town refix, get on that if you missed it the first time.  This one’s a rework of Groove Armada’s 2001 track “Superstylin.” This starts out pretty mellow and then a tyrannosaurus rex wobble comes in to take over the scene.  It’s reminiscent of the original but more dubstepwise.

Bassnectar is about to start a US tour this May and has a new single forthcoming with Tapper Zukie on the mic.  Big respect, keep an eye out especially West coasters for tour dates in your area, full list here.

Download this tune.

Bassnectar - Kingston Town Refix

Bassnectar

Oh gosh. RIDDIM!!!

Of all the remixes of Alborosie’s monster jam Kingston Town I’ve always been the most into this Bassnectar remix. It’s been smashed in mixes and on the radio for months now, and just this week Bassnectar posted it free to the world via his podcast. Massive respect to the man like Bassnectar. This tune is FIRE!!!

In case you were wondering, this is the face you should be making ——>

Check it out on his podcast, listen and download the MP3 below.
