Steppin into Tomorrow with SNF - First Episode!

I did my first show Monday on Dubstep.FM and it went off!  I had so much fun, massive respect to all listeners both in the chatroom and silent.  Posting this here with a tracklist like I’ll do for all these shows, and I’ve set up a podcast-style feed on the site just for these Dubstep.FM broadcasts.  To subscribe in iTunes go to Advanced, Subscribe to Podcast… and enter this URL:

/index.php/category/steppin/feed/

This will of course work in other readers besides iTunes also.  I should also say that I’ve got loads of new material for dubstepped, so expect a flurry of posts soon come!!!

I should also say that the mic I have at the moment is complete crap so please excuse any inappropriate mic noises  :)  I’ve got a new one on the way currently so this should be solved in the future.

Marcus Visionary - Carib EP (Liondub International)

Marcus Visionary comes with a different ting on the “Carib EP” out soon on Liondub International.  Included are three new bits and three tracks that are out on various singles.  This EP is a preview of what will be out on the longer, 23 track Carib LP out late this November.  The three released tracks (”The General” remix, “Black Panther”, and “In the VIP” out friday) are definitely worth a listen if you haven’t heard them yet.  “In the VIP” is when the so-called Sub-Soca flex comes in with whistles and a 4×4 beat under some growly dubsteppy synths.

This Sub-Soca style (first heard for me on the “Mama So Divine” remix) brings a whole new sound to the table.  Toronto’s Marcus Visionary has perfected it with the release of the Carib EP, likely to be expanded on the Carib LP.  “Left Foot Skank” has a nice, early dubstep-era wobble over a syncopated beat, but the shining track of the EP for me is “St. Vincent” when the wobble is thrown to the wind and replaced by upbeat claps, whistles, and cowbells.  Something about upbeat percussion always grabs me and I’m bubblin as I write.  Dancefloor in a club with this tune on is gonna be mobbed.  The third new entry is a collaboration on the roots dubstep tip with legendary vocalist Johnny Osbourne and production help from Liondub, feelin this one as well.

If you’re enjoying this music you should also check out what’s coming out of Portugal, Spain, and Venezuela at the moment on the interface between Dubstep, Kuduro, Soca, and general excellence from people like Octa Push, Buraka Som Sistema, Relocate, Mr. Gasparov, Pacheko, Cardopusher, and more.  Peep the Chorizo Show on sub.fm for more of this flavor.

This EP is out soon on Liondub International.  Check Juno, Chemical, Boomkat and other quality music shops, I’ll update this when I see it drop.  For now, “In the VIP” is shipping this week at Redeye or Chemical.

I.D. - Exclusive September Promo Mix

I.D.I just got sent this mix this morning from Manchester-based DJ I.D. (Earwax, Enchufada, Heavy Artillery) and I’ve been rinsing it all day.  It’s exclusive to the site for the time being and heading to more places soon.  I.D.’s releases recently (especially the Earwax one) have been stellar, take note.

Back to the mix - it’s got forthcoming tunes from Gemmy, TRG, DJ Madd, Toasty, and more.  What REALLY got me was the Baobinga & I.D. remix of the kuduro artist DJ Znobia out on the Portuguese label Enchufada which broke the kuduro legends Buraka Som Sistema.  I am such a fan of kuduro it’s irrational, here’s a mix or two to check out the style.  It’s basically Angolan music fused with Portuguese urban rhythms and it’s one of the most danceable genres of music that exists.  This mix from I.D. has a section in the middle that’s heavily influenced by kuduro that starts with the DJ Znobia remix and is the highlight of the mix for me.  Big respect on this sound, I really need to hear more.

The mix starts with futuristic off-key or wonky sounds, moves into some deeper vibes with a touch of wobble, the kuduro segment, and maintains intensity to the end.  Solid mixing, solid selections, put it on your mp3 player now.

San Franciscans need to check track 3 in this mix titled “Rainbow Road” by Gemmy and then come see him along with Mary Anne Hobbs, Akira Kiteshi, and loads more tomorrow night.

Buraka Som Sistema with DJ Sega

Title: Buraka Som Sistema with DJ Sega
Location: The Rickshaw Stop (map & info)
Description: Buraka Som Sistema, a renowned Kuduro band, will be hitting San Fran at the Rickshaw Stop. Big!
Date: 2009-04-21
Tickets: $12 plus service charge at rickshawstop.com

Buraka Som SistemaBuraka Som Sistema is easily the most world-renowned Kuduro band and this April they’ll hit San Francisco on the heels of their Coachella performance down in LA. Kuduro is Angolan music that has been coopted by the Portuguese (especially Lisbon) to produce something that is one of the most dancable forms of music I’ve ever heard. It has a minimal house-like 4×4 beat with nasty synths and a snare rhythm reminiscent of Soca, Calypso, or the budding genre UK Funky. Buraka Som Sistema has also crossed over the lines into dubstep by working with the likes of Skream, Rusko, Octa Push, and others. This show in particular will be great because of how small the rickshaw stop is - just check this photo from a previous event of theirs:

Buraka Som Sistema

I also have to say that if you’ve never seen Kuduro dancers I’m going to try to change that for you now. These people have MOVES.
