Kush Arora - The Dread Bass Chronicles

Kush Arora - The Dread Bass ChroniclesComing out tomorrow on (4/21) is the fourth studio album from Kush Arora, a San Francisco based DJ in the Surya Dub crew and producer.  Surya Dub’s monthly event at Club Six has consistently been awarded reader prizes by local magazines and never fails to get me dancing. I’m going to keep this one brief since it was also written up recently in Big Up Magazine and SFWeekly but just want to mention that if you’re into people like Disrupt, Midival Punditz, and Stephen “di genius” McGregor, then you NEED to get on this album.  The list of MCs on the album is impressive: Warrior Queen, Bongo Chilli, Juakali, MC Zulu, N4SA, and Wiseproof.  This album is more on the dancehall tip than dubstep but the synths used cause it to end up sounding like a fusion of the two.   Don’t sleep, and come check out the CD Release Party at Elbo Room on the 26th.

Kush Arora ft Juakali - Come From Yard

First off, Kush apparently (based on the SFWeekly post) is kind enough to give away his version of “Come From Yard” featuring Juakali which is one of the best tracks on the album and gets stuck in my head like super glue.  Stream it below or download it directly here.

Kush Arora ft MC Zulu - Lose Control

The next song is a dancefloor rocker in the 140bpm range called “Lose Control” with MC Zulu.  This song does an excellent job of blending dubstep and dancehall styles into something new, and I like that new thing.

Kush Arora ft Bongo Chilli - Wine Mek Me See You

The last song I’d like to preview is more straight ahead dancehall and features Bongo Chilli on the mic.  Two other songs on the album use this riddim making it the most represented with three tracks (the others are with Wiseproof and MC Zulu).  I can’t get enough of the hook in this riddim, big respects.

Misk - New Orleans

Misk

Misk is a producer from down south in San Diego who brings a song with a very original feel entitled “New Orleans.”  Really enjoying the sound space created here, feels very cave like with a big bass floor and little snares and clicks dripping from the ceiling.  Synth mastery on the bassline.  Misk said he didn’t know what genre to classify this as - I maintain that its genre is “awesome.”  Either that or “robot R&B.”
