Sam Supa - Dub Machine (Exclusive Mix)

Sam Supa (Brapdem, Grime City, Surefire) described this mix as “a true spectrum of all the Dubstep I play and what is good in music right now” and I have to agree.  Straight out the gates it’s serious with Wachs Lyrical’s “Fear VIP,” but that’s just a foreshadowing of what’s to come as it fades into deeper tunes.  Constantly through the mix Sam is taking you on a journey, in and out of darkness, showcasing various vibes in dance music.  This to me is what makes a good mix, flexing all aspects of music to produce something that cycles in and out of intensity.  I was thinking about this at the recent “Hardly Strictly Bluegrass” festival here in San Francisco where the musicians also used mellow, sparse introductions juxtaposed with more beat-heavy danceable sections to get people in the groove.  I feel like this is fundamental to well-executed dance music and this mix is a very good example.

Highlights of this for me are the intro from Wachs Lyrical, the DJG collaborations with XI and Headhunter, Eprom’s robotic glitchy track “Humanoid,” Eskmo’s bit off the Hypercolor EP (look for more from him soon on Planet Mu), Zeno’s fresh track and a Brapdem signing “Lazer Wolf 2010,” Djunya’s metallic, primal dancehall killer “Full Circle,” and Kozee’s 20,000 leagues deep tune “Sugar Loaf.”  After Kozee comes James Blake’s “Air & Lack Thereof” and this may be the best blend into the track I’ve ever heard, perfect example of going from one vibe to another seamlessly.

Featured in this mix is Skulltrane’s “This One Called Dub,” recently out on MalLabel.  They also distributed a couple free MP3s with this release, fans of the dirty sound should check these out:

Skulltrane - This One Called Dub (HD4000 Remix)

The Dubstep LA Mixtape mixed by Plastician

I’ve been waiting on this one for some time, promotion has been going around between people like Adidas and Virgin Airlines.  Should be major and expose tons of people to the sound of dubstep.  The release of this fusion of hiphop and dubstep is sure to excite and frustrate depending on your musical persuasion, but isn’t that what music is all about?  There’s definitely a strong reaction to this already with over 1,000 followers on the Dubstep LA twitter.  Now I’m wondering if there’s some tour in the workings….  Download the mixtape on GetDarker & spread the word!

Can’t forget the Dub Rap mixtape featuring Bay Area microphone stylings and other people that have been on this combination tip for time.  I love that Chae Hawk & Rx made it onto the final tape with “Malt Liquor” and Plastician’s selections are generally excellent (as expected).  I do wish that he’d gone with his own remix of “Snoop Dogg Millionaire” as that’s far better in my opinion, but I’m too played out on Eastern Jam to comment.

Big respect to all involved in this from the promoters to the MCs to the original producers.  I hope this combination continues and more people fuse these two genres to create a new flavor of dubstep (dare I say hopstep or some other nonsense genre name?)

Comment on what you’re thinking!  I’ll do the same once I give it a proper listen.  I should also add that you can download the Xzibit and Murs tunes for free.

Ricky Switch presents the DubRap mixtape ft Sky-I, Starski, and more

Dub Rap FrontDub Rap Back
Ricky Switch, Pimp Hop Records, and a host of MCs from the Bay Area and beyond present Dub Rap volume 1, a hype and diverse mixtape of dubstep and glitch beats with MCs on the track.  Styles are diverse including autotuned flows, screwed & chopped cuts, glitched out beats and ragga MCs.  This one’s a guaranteed party rocker with an excellent job by the MCs over a killer selection of dubstep beats. Get it for free at dubrap.com.  Highlights for me include Fed the Thief, Fever, Monster, Chains, Wide Open, Big Up, and Yes I’m Back, and for the top two I’d have to go with Rankin Scroo on My Trees and Dub Life. Stream it here:
They say in the intro jungle or dubstep is the only natural progression for hiphop, I’m not sure it’s the only one but I think the sound has been moving in that direction for a while. Some examples here from J. Dilla:

Here’s the official summary of the mixtape:

Over a year in the making, countless hours logged, blood, sweat, and tears poured into it, and it’s day has finally arrived, Enter: Dub Rap. This new genre of music has been defined and developed thru the making of DJ Ricky Switch’s newest mixtape: Dub Rap Volume1, featuring One Drop. Put your seat belts on it’s gonna be a bumpy ride, but if your ears are ready to hear the future of music, stay tuned….Rewind four years prior, to a remote island off the north coast of Ireland where a young, but seasoned DrumNBass DJ named Ricky Switch was first being being exposed to wobble basslines, boom bap slaps, and a whole new sound of music which he soon found himself engulfed in, Dubstep. Shortly after, Ricky packed his bags and moved out to California, the San Francisco Bay Area to be exact. He found his way DJ’ing the few Dubstep and DnB shows that he could find, and doing so he also became involved in the local hip hop scene, where he joined the underground rap group Distant Relatives. In due course, he would share a studio with local Bay Area Rapper Starski, and while Ricky would be bumping dubstep dj sets in one room, Starski and his crew were knocking out raps in the other. It was only a matter of time before peanut butter met the chocolate and Reese’s Pieces was made, or as they call it Dub Rap.

During the process of working on the mixtape, they created a marriage the authentic sounds of UK Dubstep music and hardcore underground bay area MC’s and singers. Instantly, the artists became fully engrossed in the sounds and space that Dubstep offers a vocalist and found many ways to deliver their art form. Over 50 tracks were recorded in a year’s time, and only about half of them made it to the mixtape (respect to the ones that didn’t). The Dub Rap sound that came out of this experience is an intense mix of otherworldly sounds courtesy of UK Dubstep rhythms, and the future of bay area and worldwide hip hop music.

This project was done with much praise and respect given to the originators of Dubstep, and the producers who made the music that made this mix possible. It’s aimed at giving the genre another avenue to allow it to grow and to expose more people to it’s undeniable sound and originality. The core artists (the mcs/ singers) involved have no doubts that they will continue to work within this medium of art to allow their creative juices to flourish and expand on an ever broadening horizon of Dubstep visions. Their is no question that the genre of “Dubrap” will catch on with other artists the world over, and allow rappers and singers alike to grow into the next millennium of audio murder: Dubstep and now Dubrap.

Dubstep LA Mixtape Preview courtesy Plastician

See here for the Dubstep LA mixtape: dubstepped or GetDarker

This is going to be the summer that dubstep exploded. The growth over the past year or so has been rampant with an estimated tenfold more shows in San Francisco so far this year than last year. This is only going to continue in the face of this mixtape due to come out in about a month. I don’t even have the full tracklist but the bits that I’ve heard destined for the mix make me know that this is going to get rinsed everywhere, including grocery store speakers, pop radio stations, and so forth. Whether this is good or bad is up for debate. Personally I love this sound and know that it will keep evolving. I was blown away when I first heard produers like Joker or Gemmy that they didn’t have hiphop MCs queueing to flow over the tracks and now it’s finally happening.

Alexander Spit

Living Legends

Snoop Dogg

Xzibit

The mixtape is called “Mr Grustle and Tha Russian Present Dubstep LA.There are at least 6 tracks on it though I’m not sure on the official tracklist. Plastician (rinse.fm, Terrorhythm, Surefire) is mixing the tracks for the mixtape and sampled a bunch of them yesterday on his weekly rinse.fm radio show (download). I got so excited that I’m going to post samples from the set. Some of these are predictable, but some really blew me away, especially the Grouch and Eligh vs Vex’d cut. These previews are low quality with talking over them but I don’t care, give it a listen and take it in.

Before I post these I have to give credit to the people that have been producing similar work for time, notably DJ Nappy and the Rock The Dub THUGSTEP series (free downloads there), Dread Foxx, gWorm (see his recent mix), AC Slater (check here), Rx and Chae Hawk (check Malt Liquor on Rx’s space), KidLogic with the cali remixed EP (he as another one coming out this summer), and the Totally Unauthorized album by MRK1 and Chimpo.  Late breaking additions: forgot the remix tendencies of 6blocc, Parson, and the Dumbsteppaz. Also check out this early tune from Nebulla plus DJ Dore on La Dubstep Nostra.

Right, back to the mixtape. The general theme is existing dubstep productions iced by a variety of hiphop MCs. Beats are pretty raw and edgy including two bits from Chase & Status. First up, the first one released and the one that started a HUGE discussion in the scene about the future of dubstep, Snoop Dogg Millionaire:

And Plastician’s remix of Snoop Dogg Millionaire (I like this one much more):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Now for the freshness. I’m starting off with the track that I was feelin the most which is The Grouch and Eligh of Living Legends over the Jamie Vex’d remix of Scuba - Twitch. Listening to a teaser of this track is like eating just one pringle: leaves you wanting more and more and more.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Next we’ve got Murs vs Chase & Status - Madhouse. Madhouse is a SERIOUS tune in a similar style to Eastern Jam and Saxon. Murs rips it. Love this one too.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Fifth tune is from Alexander Spit based here in San Francisco over Rusko - Mr. Chips. Again this one is BAD. When I first envisioned MCs over dubstep it wasnt over tracks like Chase & Status and Rusko’s productions, but man it works well.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Last but definitely not least is Jimmy Jams vs Rustie & Joker - Play Doe. Play Doe has been asking for an MC from day and I’m amazed it took this long to get one on it. Jimmy Jams destroys the mic, big sounds.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The only other info I have is that there’s a still unheard tune with Xzibit vs D1 which has serious potential. Gotta get the mixtape to hear that one :)

For more info check twitter/dubstepla, twitter/djplastician, and this site. Now looking forward I’d really like to hear Busta Rhymes, Aesop Rock, Keak da Sneak, and tons of other MCs over dubstep, especially over the sounds of folks like Joker, Jakes, Gemmy, Guido, Plastician, Noah D, Starkey, and so on. Gonna get wild this summer!!!

The last thing I’ll say is to the haters both in press and in the forums is that a musical style is made to evolve. Dubstep itself evolved from dark garage and is currently an alamgam of many different genres of music. To claim that something like the introduction of American hiphop MCs to the sound of dubstep will “commercialize” or “ruin” the sound is shortsighted. This sound is a new dimension in dubstep, yet another sound that falls under the name of “dubstep.” The exact reason this music is so magical to me is because of the variety of sounds that are all “dubstep” so adding another dimension just means for more diverse mixes. Tell Miles Davis that by recording Bitches Brew he ruined Jazz. Tell Elvis that his sound ruined the blues. Tell Grandmaster Flash that mixing breaks ruined funk. And if you’re really not feeling it then just don’t play it.

gWorm - Hiphop Meets Wobble Mix

gWorm

gWorm from Dallas Fort Worth brings some southern dubstep flavor with this one in a BIG, wobbly mix featuring a bunch of hiphop & dubstep mashups to start off the set.  All in all most tunes have vocals, many with hiphop influences.  Wobbles are large in this one, you know any mix with Chainsaw Calligraphy in it is serious.  If you dunno about that track listen to this mix and get to know.  Sam Supa and Kozee once had a ‘filth-off’ at the makeout sessions here in San Francisco and the finale was Chainsaw Calligraphy - there’s simply nowhere to go from there.

I’m really feeling this hiphop & dubstep hybrid, but I’ve always been a sucker for the mashups.  Beyond that though the selection on this mix is ace and the mixing is excellent.  Big respect to gWorm, loving this sound.  If you’re feeling this vibe and are interested in similar sounds check out gWorm’s edit of Move If You Wanna and the Totally Unauthorized comp by MRK1 and Chimpo.

Sam Supa - Darkness and Hype - Brap Dem Promo Mix

This new mix from Sam Supa (Grime City, Brap Dem) is a diverse and quality selection of fresh dubstep tunes.  The mixing is excellent, Sam is a pro blender (KitchenAid quality).  Lots of big tunes on this one but my favorites are Von D - Show Me, Kial - Bell Curve, and Jakes - Custard Cream.  This one’s dangerous.  Download & enjoy, then come see Sam live in action tonight or at the next Grime City.

Outlaw Producer & Troubleman - Extra

Outlaw Producer

Trouble Man

Today I’m happy to post a tune out of the Austin, Tx production duo of Outlaw Producer and Trouble Man. This beat is done in a wonky style and is sick. Putting it up here because the split between this, dubstep, grime, crunk, glitch hop, and etc is sort of meaningless at times. This song is excellent, and would compete with any Joker, Guido, Gemmy, Rustie, or Jakes tune in my book. Serious business. Take note.
