Dhyan Møller - Quirkey Remixes EP on Blipswitch

Quirkey Donkey RemixesOut tomorrow on Blipswitch recordings is this three track remix EP by diverse artists DJG, Mossmoss, and Metaphase.? I’ve been playing the DJG and Metaphase remixes and the Mossmoss is equally nice.? Blipswitch compares this one to the Coalition of the Killing remix EP they put out a while ago which is definitely appropriate.? Both are packed with quality tracks remixed in diverse styles by excellent producers.

Dhyan Møller - Lost in 3’s (DJG Remix)

DJG sets this one off with a deeper dubstep remix of the tune Lost in 3’s.? DJG included this one in his set for Mary Anne Hobbs a while ago, it caught my ears and has been stuck since, big remix.

Dhyan Møller - Quirkey Donkey (Mossmoss Remix)

Mossmoss stays more true to the original on his take of Quirkey Donkey, dubby techno sounds with playful synths. Feeling this remix definitely.

Dhyan Møller - Quirkey Donkey (Metaphase Remix)

Keeping only select elements of the source material and spicing it up with a wobble Metaphase comes with a more in your face dubstep version of Quirkey Donkey.? Strong bass helps round out the tune keeping the midrange in check, very nice remix.

DJ Solo - Crush.Kill.Destroy (dubstep turntablism!)

DJ Solo of the Soul Assassins crew (DJ Muggs, Cypress Hill, GZA, etc) down in LA comes with this uniquely styled mixtape in dubstep circles with transitions of cutting and scratching rather than blending.? It fits with the music though cause most of these tunes are intense club riddims that are all about the drop and he cuts straight into it.? Different style, give it a listen.? Hiphop heads will be familiar.? I think it’s damn hype.? Blending of mixing styles like this is exactly what happens when people that like different sorts of music get together and vibe over, well, the music.? Bigup to DJ Solo & the rest of the crew.

As Solo puts it “It’s not the newest, most exclusive tracks, just some hard, bangin beats that get me hype and ready to CRUSH.KILL.DESTROY!“? I gotta agree, strictly heat inside even if some of it is dated, but there are also some Solo blends that spice things up.? Excellent selections regardless of age, put this on in your car when you’re heading to the club. Quick mixing on this too with 30 tracks in 50 minutes. Did I mention hype?

Check the tracklist below and scope out the crew’s site.? Download the mix here.

Dumbsteppaz - Sho Nuff and Southern Fried Dub (free dl)

The Dumbsteppaz from LA just came out with some fresh tunes and a free download for the hiphop crossover lovers.? Featured here is one of the tracks called “Sho Nuff” which is an intense wobbler for the ravers. Loving the wobble manipulation on this one.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Next is the free tune, a dubstep reworking of Ludacris - Southern Fried.? People definitely mentioned Luda as someone that needed to flow on dubstep and this refix is a prime example of why.? I hope he gets on it.

On the personal tip I’m moving at the moment (within San Francisco) so expect the post frequency to be low for a bit.? Next episode of Dubstepped Radio coming up in the first week of June, look out for that one, tracklist is guaranteed to please.

Bombaman - Flower People bw 6blocc - Dead Flowers Remix

Rarely have I seen a video work as well with music as this Terminator Salvation trailer and this forthcoming La Dubstep Nostra release.? In fact, I think these tunes work dramatically better than the music in the actual trailer.? La Dubstep Nostra releases the darker side of dubstep with past work from Parson, Ultrablack, 6blocc, Monsta and more. On to the tunes..

Bombaman - Flower People

The first tune is like a militant robot waking up from a nap with the arcing electricity in the beginning and marching beat.? Once the robot wakes it… well you see the video…

Once that synth hits at 1:30 or so I’m skanking nonstop.? Make sure you hit that HQ to hear it in proper quality.

6blocc vs Bombaman - Dead Flowers Remix

6blocc minimizes the bass synths and transforms the feel of the original to a much sharper sound. The cut-up beat and percussion sounds are new and combine with elements of the original yielding a nicely done remix.

Get this bad boy starting with promos on 4/20 followed by a general release.? Big respect to La Dubstep Nostra, Bombaman, and 6blocc.

DLX and Merlow - Cool Blue bw Free Bass DAV002

Dubs Alive 002San Francisco based Dubs Alive records comes with their second release again featuring the use of live instruments in dubstep. This one has a jazzy feel with tracks from DLX and Merlow featuring Giuliano Pizzulo on the electric bass. Anyone who’s seen Rusko’s live performance with resampled electric bass and drum loops should take note - dubstep with live instruments is not to be dismissed.

DLX from Los Angeles showcases his excellent snare construction with drums that hit harder than mid-90s jungle and a mutilated vocal sample that reminds me of “Here Comes the Hotstepper.” Mellow track overall, something to vibe to.

Merlow (no, not Marlow) also from LA comes with a different style on the second track with grimy effected out bass and a plethora of percussion layers. The lead synth and percussive nature of the track takes me back to some old Squarepusher, notably Hard Normal Daddy.

Two Oh One - Wah Wah Wah

Two Oh OneThis tune is from Two Oh One, a recent emigrant from Croydon to LA.? You can definitely hear his roots in his sound, this song rides nicely up next to some Benga, N-Type, or Seven. Feelin the glitched out snares and the sound in general.? Really minimal but effective.? It especially reminds me of Benga - Buzzin.? Only complaint is that it could be a bit longer, but that’s just personal..? bigup Two Oh One.

Dumbsteppaz - Halcyon and on and on dubstep refix

Dumbsteppaz

Orbital was a huge band for me in the 90s and I’ve gotta say I was nervous when I saw a refix of this anthem.? This refix by the Dumbsteppaz nails it though.? The key is that the original upbeat and positive feel is maintained, and the wobble that’s in the track is subdued and adds some tension without taking away from the melodic feel.? Big jungle influence coming in in the second drop to add some spice.? Nice tune.
