Steppin into Tomorrow with SNF 005 12.07.09 on Dubstep.FM

This might be my favorite show yet.  Ridiculously diverse, with a reggae-influenced dubstep interlude, post-garage riddims, deep basswise sounds and some classic tracks.  New songs in this one from Kid Simple, The Widdler, Starkey, Helixir, Yong, Sines, Hypno, Asusu, and many more.  Get it in your ears!

Mixes for Monday: Kid Simple vs Slevin Dubs

Pair of fresh mixes for today from Seattle’s Kid Simple and St. Louis’s Slevin Dubs. Both are on the harder side of things but bring their own flavor to your ears. First up, Kid Simple:

Kid Simple - ‘09 Promo Mix

Kid Simple has been making innovative, dancefloor oriented productions for time now and to my knowledge this is his first distributed mix.  He’s lately been picked up by Double Drop recordings here in SF and has been included in a bunch of mixes that are floating around, notably Starkey’s FACT mix.  This one is riddled with his own productions, I hope it gets him some deserving notice.

Tracklist (44 mins):
Kid Simple - Fresh Like (Forthcoming Double Drop)
Kid Simple - Where You Left VIP (Forthcoming Double Drop)
Numan - Virgo (Unreleased)
Eskmo - Let Them Sing (Planet Mu)
Rx - Just Ya Nutz (Unreleased)
NTRLD & Thurgood - Magic Pills (Double Drop)
Kid Simple - Simplify (Unreleased)
Kid Simple - Bananas (Shift)
Starkey - Rain City (Forthcoming RWINA)
Kanji Kinetic - Thrill Seeker (Unreleased)
Numan - Squarebot (Unreleased)
Guido - Chakra (Punch Drunk)
Distal - Attempt at Yellow (Unreleased)
Kid Simple - Dripz (Unreleased)
Kid Simple - Yes Or No VIP (Unreleased)

Blackboard Jungle: From Dub to Dubstep (Lee Perry & Jahdan Minidocumentary)

Subatomic Sound brings us this excellent minidocumentary about the evolution of Dub to Dubstep music, focusing on Lee Perry and Jahdan Blakkamoore. Lee “Scratch” Perry is a legend among dub producers and has always been known to push the boundaries of music, consistently bringing new electronic elements into his sound of dub.  It’s not surprising that he started making Dubstep given this since it’s the next evolution of sound.  This documentary traces the roots of Lee Perry’s dubstep sounds and focuses on some fresh developments, with excellent live concert footage and a short interview with Rusko. Featured on vocals are the stylings of Jahdan Blakkamoore.  Subatomic Sound sums it up:

1973, Jamaica.  2009, to the world!  The story of the seminal dub album “Blackboard Jungle” from Lee Scratch Perry and King Tubby that was cornerstone of the dub music craze that would extend around the world.  In 2009 Vienna’s dub masters Dubblestandart called on Perry to revisit the vibes.  This collaboration stretched around the globe to involve New York City’s dub scientists Subatomic Sound System & rising reggae vocal talent Jahdan Blakkamoore, and resulted in the first ever original dubstep tunes from Lee Scratch Perry plus a journey back into the Blackboard Jungle!

Lee Perry has now put out a number of excellent dubstep tunes and has worked with many producers including Kode 9:

Dubwise version of Max Romeo’s - Chase the Devil (produced by the Upsetters), redubbed by Lee Perry, Dubblestandart and G Corp:

And the featured tune of the documentary ‘Blackboard Jungle’ with Jahdan Blakkmoore and the Subatomic Sound System:

Dubblestandart ft Jahdan Blakkamoore - Blackboard Jungle (Subatomic Sound Respect The Foundation remix)

DJ Solo - Crush.Kill.Destroy (dubstep turntablism!)

DJ Solo of the Soul Assassins crew (DJ Muggs, Cypress Hill, GZA, etc) down in LA comes with this uniquely styled mixtape in dubstep circles with transitions of cutting and scratching rather than blending.  It fits with the music though cause most of these tunes are intense club riddims that are all about the drop and he cuts straight into it.  Different style, give it a listen.  Hiphop heads will be familiar.  I think it’s damn hype.  Blending of mixing styles like this is exactly what happens when people that like different sorts of music get together and vibe over, well, the music.  Bigup to DJ Solo & the rest of the crew.

As Solo puts it “It’s not the newest, most exclusive tracks, just some hard, bangin beats that get me hype and ready to CRUSH.KILL.DESTROY!“  I gotta agree, strictly heat inside even if some of it is dated, but there are also some Solo blends that spice things up.  Excellent selections regardless of age, put this on in your car when you’re heading to the club. Quick mixing on this too with 30 tracks in 50 minutes. Did I mention hype?

Check the tracklist below and scope out the crew’s site.  Download the mix here.

30. Blazin/The End – Solo x Zeno x 6Blocc

DJ Solo also did a dubstep edition of his series 40’s and Blunts with 6blocc, Woes, and Darklord of La Dubstep Nostra.  Pretty sick show including live high-grade scratching with dubstep.  I think this is even more dope than the studio mix:

Location: 103 Harriet st (map & info)
Description: Rusko brings a live combo of bass guitar and dubstep which gets the crowd moving everytime. Datsik comes with his patented ultrafilthy version of dubstep.  Local support on the dubstep/glitch boundary.

Dubstep LA Mixtape Preview courtesy Plastician

See here for the Dubstep LA mixtape: dubstepped or GetDarker

This is going to be the summer that dubstep exploded. The growth over the past year or so has been rampant with an estimated tenfold more shows in San Francisco so far this year than last year. This is only going to continue in the face of this mixtape due to come out in about a month. I don’t even have the full tracklist but the bits that I’ve heard destined for the mix make me know that this is going to get rinsed everywhere, including grocery store speakers, pop radio stations, and so forth. Whether this is good or bad is up for debate. Personally I love this sound and know that it will keep evolving. I was blown away when I first heard produers like Joker or Gemmy that they didn’t have hiphop MCs queueing to flow over the tracks and now it’s finally happening.

Alexander Spit

Living Legends

Snoop Dogg

Xzibit

The mixtape is called “Mr Grustle and Tha Russian Present Dubstep LA.There are at least 6 tracks on it though I’m not sure on the official tracklist. Plastician (rinse.fm, Terrorhythm, Surefire) is mixing the tracks for the mixtape and sampled a bunch of them yesterday on his weekly rinse.fm radio show (download). I got so excited that I’m going to post samples from the set. Some of these are predictable, but some really blew me away, especially the Grouch and Eligh vs Vex’d cut. These previews are low quality with talking over them but I don’t care, give it a listen and take it in.

Before I post these I have to give credit to the people that have been producing similar work for time, notably DJ Nappy and the Rock The Dub THUGSTEP series (free downloads there), Dread Foxx, gWorm (see his recent mix), AC Slater (check here), Rx and Chae Hawk (check Malt Liquor on Rx’s space), KidLogic with the cali remixed EP (he as another one coming out this summer), and the Totally Unauthorized album by MRK1 and Chimpo.  Late breaking additions: forgot the remix tendencies of 6blocc, Parson, and the Dumbsteppaz. Also check out this early tune from Nebulla plus DJ Dore on La Dubstep Nostra.

Right, back to the mixtape. The general theme is existing dubstep productions iced by a variety of hiphop MCs. Beats are pretty raw and edgy including two bits from Chase & Status. First up, the first one released and the one that started a HUGE discussion in the scene about the future of dubstep, Snoop Dogg Millionaire:

And Plastician’s remix of Snoop Dogg Millionaire (I like this one much more):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Now for the freshness. I’m starting off with the track that I was feelin the most which is The Grouch and Eligh of Living Legends over the Jamie Vex’d remix of Scuba - Twitch. Listening to a teaser of this track is like eating just one pringle: leaves you wanting more and more and more.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Next we’ve got Murs vs Chase & Status - Madhouse. Madhouse is a SERIOUS tune in a similar style to Eastern Jam and Saxon. Murs rips it. Love this one too.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Fifth tune is from Alexander Spit based here in San Francisco over Rusko - Mr. Chips. Again this one is BAD. When I first envisioned MCs over dubstep it wasnt over tracks like Chase & Status and Rusko’s productions, but man it works well.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Last but definitely not least is Jimmy Jams vs Rustie & Joker - Play Doe. Play Doe has been asking for an MC from day and I’m amazed it took this long to get one on it. Jimmy Jams destroys the mic, big sounds.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The only other info I have is that there’s a still unheard tune with Xzibit vs D1 which has serious potential. Gotta get the mixtape to hear that one :)

For more info check twitter/dubstepla, twitter/djplastician, and this site. Now looking forward I’d really like to hear Busta Rhymes, Aesop Rock, Keak da Sneak, and tons of other MCs over dubstep, especially over the sounds of folks like Joker, Jakes, Gemmy, Guido, Plastician, Noah D, Starkey, and so on. Gonna get wild this summer!!!

The last thing I’ll say is to the haters both in press and in the forums is that a musical style is made to evolve. Dubstep itself evolved from dark garage and is currently an alamgam of many different genres of music. To claim that something like the introduction of American hiphop MCs to the sound of dubstep will “commercialize” or “ruin” the sound is shortsighted. This sound is a new dimension in dubstep, yet another sound that falls under the name of “dubstep.” The exact reason this music is so magical to me is because of the variety of sounds that are all “dubstep” so adding another dimension just means for more diverse mixes. Tell Miles Davis that by recording Bitches Brew he ruined Jazz. Tell Elvis that his sound ruined the blues. Tell Grandmaster Flash that mixing breaks ruined funk. And if you’re really not feeling it then just don’t play it.

gWorm - Hiphop Meets Wobble Mix

gWorm

gWorm from Dallas Fort Worth brings some southern dubstep flavor with this one in a BIG, wobbly mix featuring a bunch of hiphop & dubstep mashups to start off the set.  All in all most tunes have vocals, many with hiphop influences.  Wobbles are large in this one, you know any mix with Chainsaw Calligraphy in it is serious.  If you dunno about that track listen to this mix and get to know.  Sam Supa and Kozee once had a ‘filth-off’ at the makeout sessions here in San Francisco and the finale was Chainsaw Calligraphy - there’s simply nowhere to go from there.

I’m really feeling this hiphop & dubstep hybrid, but I’ve always been a sucker for the mashups.  Beyond that though the selection on this mix is ace and the mixing is excellent.  Big respect to gWorm, loving this sound.  If you’re feeling this vibe and are interested in similar sounds check out gWorm’s edit of Move If You Wanna and the Totally Unauthorized comp by MRK1 and Chimpo.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

DLX and Merlow - Cool Blue bw Free Bass DAV002

Dubs Alive 002San Francisco based Dubs Alive records comes with their second release again featuring the use of live instruments in dubstep. This one has a jazzy feel with tracks from DLX and Merlow featuring Giuliano Pizzulo on the electric bass. Anyone who’s seen Rusko’s live performance with resampled electric bass and drum loops should take note - dubstep with live instruments is not to be dismissed.

DLX from Los Angeles showcases his excellent snare construction with drums that hit harder than mid-90s jungle and a mutilated vocal sample that reminds me of “Here Comes the Hotstepper.” Mellow track overall, something to vibe to.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Merlow (no, not Marlow) also from LA comes with a different style on the second track with grimy effected out bass and a plethora of percussion layers. The lead synth and percussive nature of the track takes me back to some old Squarepusher, notably Hard Normal Daddy.

Buraka Som Sistema with DJ Sega

Title: Buraka Som Sistema with DJ Sega
Location: The Rickshaw Stop (map & info)
Description: Buraka Som Sistema, a renowned Kuduro band, will be hitting San Fran at the Rickshaw Stop. Big!
Date: 2009-04-21
Tickets: $12 plus service charge at rickshawstop.com

Buraka Som SistemaBuraka Som Sistema is easily the most world-renowned Kuduro band and this April they’ll hit San Francisco on the heels of their Coachella performance down in LA. Kuduro is Angolan music that has been coopted by the Portuguese (especially Lisbon) to produce something that is one of the most dancable forms of music I’ve ever heard. It has a minimal house-like 4×4 beat with nasty synths and a snare rhythm reminiscent of Soca, Calypso, or the budding genre UK Funky. Buraka Som Sistema has also crossed over the lines into dubstep by working with the likes of Skream, Rusko, Octa Push, and others. This show in particular will be great because of how small the rickshaw stop is - just check this photo from a previous event of theirs:

Buraka Som Sistema

I also have to say that if you’ve never seen Kuduro dancers I’m going to try to change that for you now. These people have MOVES.
