Steppin into Tomorrow with SNF 004 11.30.09 on Dubstep.FM

Steppin Into TomorrowThere’s so much music that comes out in dubstep that it’s deadly difficult to even begin to select tracks!  Because of this I went 30 minutes overtime this show, just too many tunes to play.  New to this episode is a forthcoming release by Jus Wan on Tube10, two tracks from KingThing destined for release, two tracks off Sines’ new EP on L2S Recordings, two off Pinch’s Get Up remix EP just out, and much much more.  To the tunes:

Steppin into Tomorrow with SNF - First Episode!

I did my first show Monday on Dubstep.FM and it went off!  I had so much fun, massive respect to all listeners both in the chatroom and silent.  Posting this here with a tracklist like I’ll do for all these shows, and I’ve set up a podcast-style feed on the site just for these Dubstep.FM broadcasts.  To subscribe in iTunes go to Advanced, Subscribe to Podcast… and enter this URL:

/index.php/category/steppin/feed/

This will of course work in other readers besides iTunes also.  I should also say that I’ve got loads of new material for dubstepped, so expect a flurry of posts soon come!!!

I should also say that the mic I have at the moment is complete crap so please excuse any inappropriate mic noises  :)  I’ve got a new one on the way currently so this should be solved in the future.

The Dubstep LA Mixtape mixed by Plastician

I’ve been waiting on this one for some time, promotion has been going around between people like Adidas and Virgin Airlines.  Should be major and expose tons of people to the sound of dubstep.  The release of this fusion of hiphop and dubstep is sure to excite and frustrate depending on your musical persuasion, but isn’t that what music is all about?  There’s definitely a strong reaction to this already with over 1,000 followers on the Dubstep LA twitter.  Now I’m wondering if there’s some tour in the workings….  Download the mixtape on GetDarker & spread the word!

Can’t forget the Dub Rap mixtape featuring Bay Area microphone stylings and other people that have been on this combination tip for time.  I love that Chae Hawk & Rx made it onto the final tape with “Malt Liquor” and Plastician’s selections are generally excellent (as expected).  I do wish that he’d gone with his own remix of “Snoop Dogg Millionaire” as that’s far better in my opinion, but I’m too played out on Eastern Jam to comment.

Big respect to all involved in this from the promoters to the MCs to the original producers.  I hope this combination continues and more people fuse these two genres to create a new flavor of dubstep (dare I say hopstep or some other nonsense genre name?)

Comment on what you’re thinking!  I’ll do the same once I give it a proper listen.  I should also add that you can download the Xzibit and Murs tunes for free.

Mellow Mixes for Sunday

A pair of mixes today from KidLogic from LA and J. Rogers of Blipswitch here in SF.  Both are on the deeper side of things and are perfect for chilling out on a Sunday.  Been rinsing them pretty heavily myself, just getting around to posting them up now.

KidLogic - Mix for Sundays

First up is KidLogic’s “Mix for Sundays” which is an adventure through styles from dubstep to funky and the wonderful ground in between.  Big tunes in the mix and the blending is excellent.  Check out his virb player for recent productions, highly recommended.  This mix is exclusive to dubstepped thanks to KL, respect.  Check out his shows on dubstep.fm if you’re enjoying this one, he’s usually on the Supernormous Sessions.

Big Up Magazine - Spring 2009

Big Up Magazine - Spring 2009I got my Spring copy of Big Up Magazine from Katya at the Surefire monthly last Saturday and finished reading it last night.  Well-designed and packed with 13 interviews with diverse artists and musicians it’s a good read.  The words of Goth-Trad were the most captivating to me.  His description of the status of dubstep in Japan and his musical evolution was really a fun read especially because I didn’t know that much about him.  Mary Anne Hobbs also had a great interview focusing on the “West Coast Rocks” sound of Flying Lotus, Lazer Sword, The Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus, Nobody, the Glitch Mob and others.  Artwise, Nik Ainley’s pieces really stuck out as quality, though all the art was quite good.  Putting visually-stunning art in between the music interviews is a nice contrast as you go back and forth between thinking about the audio and visual worlds.

Nik Ainley - Headache

My reading of the magazine would be interrupted every so often by the quality of Kutz’s selections coming out my speakers on the included mix.  Kutz is a sick producer and DJ based out of the UK with two stellar recent releases on Soul Jazz (Drumz of No Return / Tarantula and Travelling / Static).  Big things coming from him on the dubplate front too.

Any set that starts off with Benga vs Kutz - I’ll Kut Ya you know is gonna be good.  Personals were Skream - Filth (Silkie remix), Kutz – Grit Ya Teeth, Von D. feat Phephe - Show Me, and Klic feat Alys Be – Move Me.  Alys Be seems to have a knack for working with people that I’ve yet to hear and producing huge tunes with them.  Massive respect.  Check out a recent edition of the Transition show on Rinse.FM featuring Alys Be on the mic in studio.  Silkie is doing huge things at the moment also with tunes out like Techno 22, Headbutt the Decks, and the his remix of Tell Me (also ft Alys Be).

Big Up is available in SF at Babylon Falling, Amoeba, Super7, or Smoke Signals, or via the website at bigupmagazine.com.  Big Up is also hosting a third launch party soon featuring Emalkay’s first US appearance.. should be most excellent.

Finally I have to mention this killer new proposal in the magazine which is to promote creation of music videos for dubstep by establishing a dubstep video community.  I think this is an excellent idea and hope that it takes off.  Here’s two of the first submissions, the first by Big Up contributor MZO:
