Mellow Mixes for Sunday

A pair of mixes today from KidLogic from LA and J. Rogers of Blipswitch here in SF.  Both are on the deeper side of things and are perfect for chilling out on a Sunday.  Been rinsing them pretty heavily myself, just getting around to posting them up now.

KidLogic - Mix for Sundays

First up is KidLogic’s “Mix for Sundays” which is an adventure through styles from dubstep to funky and the wonderful ground in between.  Big tunes in the mix and the blending is excellent.  Check out his virb player for recent productions, highly recommended.  This mix is exclusive to dubstepped thanks to KL, respect.  Check out his shows on dubstep.fm if you’re enjoying this one, he’s usually on the Supernormous Sessions.

HD4000 - Fake Rekkidz and Guess Who

HD4000Next up is a pair of tunes from Bakersfield, CA based production duo HD4000 made up of Odeed (left) and Wish (right).  They just wrecked shop at Headband in Santa Cruz by all accounts last weekend.  Keep your eyes out for dates with them on the West coast.

The first tune is ‘Fake Rekkidz’ which is a big refix of Dead Prez’s wobbly hiphop anthem ‘Hip Hop.’  This one’s dangerous, bonefide party rocker.

‘Guess Who’ is the second tune given out which is my personal favorite of the pair.  The original from Black Uhuru is an all time favorite reggae tune of mine so I’m really feeling this remix.  Big tings.

Bombaman - Flower People bw 6blocc - Dead Flowers Remix

Rarely have I seen a video work as well with music as this Terminator Salvation trailer and this forthcoming La Dubstep Nostra release.  In fact, I think these tunes work dramatically better than the music in the actual trailer.  La Dubstep Nostra releases the darker side of dubstep with past work from Parson, Ultrablack, 6blocc, Monsta and more. On to the tunes..

Bombaman - Flower People

The first tune is like a militant robot waking up from a nap with the arcing electricity in the beginning and marching beat.  Once the robot wakes it… well you see the video…

Once that synth hits at 1:30 or so I’m skanking nonstop.  Make sure you hit that HQ to hear it in proper quality.

6blocc vs Bombaman - Dead Flowers Remix

6blocc minimizes the bass synths and transforms the feel of the original to a much sharper sound. The cut-up beat and percussion sounds are new and combine with elements of the original yielding a nicely done remix.

Get this bad boy starting with promos on 4/20 followed by a general release.  Big respect to La Dubstep Nostra, Bombaman, and 6blocc.

DLX and Merlow - Cool Blue bw Free Bass DAV002

Dubs Alive 002San Francisco based Dubs Alive records comes with their second release again featuring the use of live instruments in dubstep. This one has a jazzy feel with tracks from DLX and Merlow featuring Giuliano Pizzulo on the electric bass. Anyone who’s seen Rusko’s live performance with resampled electric bass and drum loops should take note - dubstep with live instruments is not to be dismissed.

DLX from Los Angeles showcases his excellent snare construction with drums that hit harder than mid-90s jungle and a mutilated vocal sample that reminds me of “Here Comes the Hotstepper.” Mellow track overall, something to vibe to.

Merlow (no, not Marlow) also from LA comes with a different style on the second track with grimy effected out bass and a plethora of percussion layers. The lead synth and percussive nature of the track takes me back to some old Squarepusher, notably Hard Normal Daddy.

Nephilim - Ill Cativo (ekaj Remix)

ekaj

Nephilim

This tune is a club banger courtesy Nephilim out of Hollywood and ekaj from the other side of the pond in Lancaster, UK.  The original (see Nephilim’s virb player) is a really dark tune which is remixed nicely by ekaj.  Thickened snares and extra percussion hype up the original and take it to a new level.  Recommended if you like Breakage, Distance, Kutz, or some of Skream’s darker work.  Big it!

Violet Gray and (DUB) A-Tak present Danger Dub Duo Vol 1

Violet Gray and Dub A-Tak - Danger Dub Duo Vol 1

This is a filthy hour of music from Los Angeles residents Violet Gray and DJ A-Tak.  Definitely for the dark inclined.  Mixing and selection are excellent - respect Violet Gray and A-Tak.  Tak was very humble about this mix but it really is quality.

Misk - New Orleans

Misk

Misk is a producer from down south in San Diego who brings a song with a very original feel entitled “New Orleans.”  Really enjoying the sound space created here, feels very cave like with a big bass floor and little snares and clicks dripping from the ceiling.  Synth mastery on the bassline.  Misk said he didn’t know what genre to classify this as - I maintain that its genre is “awesome.”  Either that or “robot R&B.”

Two Oh One - Wah Wah Wah

Two Oh OneThis tune is from Two Oh One, a recent emigrant from Croydon to LA.  You can definitely hear his roots in his sound, this song rides nicely up next to some Benga, N-Type, or Seven. Feelin the glitched out snares and the sound in general.  Really minimal but effective.  It especially reminds me of Benga - Buzzin.  Only complaint is that it could be a bit longer, but that’s just personal..  bigup Two Oh One.

Dumbsteppaz - Halcyon and on and on dubstep refix

Dumbsteppaz

Orbital was a huge band for me in the 90s and I’ve gotta say I was nervous when I saw a refix of this anthem.  This refix by the Dumbsteppaz nails it though.  The key is that the original upbeat and positive feel is maintained, and the wobble that’s in the track is subdued and adds some tension without taking away from the melodic feel.  Big jungle influence coming in in the second drop to add some spice.  Nice tune.
