Jahdan Blakkamoore – Buzzrock Warrior

Vocal prowess, innovative and excellent production, top notch guest MCs and a diversity of styles makes this album one of the tops of the year for me.  It came out two weeks ago now on Gold Dust and I’ve been dying to write about it but things just stacked up, you know.  Featured on vocals is obviously Jahdan Blakkamoore with appeareances from Durrty Goodz (if you slept on his 2009 album get it NOW), 77Klash, and Abena Koomson.  Production comes mostly from Dutty Artz members DJ /Rupture and Matt Shadetek who have generated a stunning diversity of sound from the medieval ’step of ‘Get Hustlin‘ to the bhangra-esque beat on ‘Lets Go‘ and the dancehall feel of ‘Dem a Idiot‘.  Production is tops.  My one complaint is the strong use of autotune on this, but in some circumstances it adds to the vibe.  Personal preference I guess, been hearing a lot of that floating around lately (or maybe I’ve been listening to too much Mavado).

Samples of my picks off the album below, pick it up at the usual places.  Also some free tunes from Jahdan thanks to XLR8R here and here.

Kush Arora – Boiling Over EP

Local Dread Bass champion Kush Arora has a new EP coming out soon fresh on the heels of Dread Bass Chronicles that dropped earlier this year.  Included are a couple of the riddims that were used on Dread Bass Chronicles (Boiling Over and SF Shuffle Riddim), two collaborations with NYC’s Sub Swara, and tunes with SF’s J. Rogers, Rozanski, and The Spit Brothers.  Diverse basswise sounds.  To promote the release one of the tracks is being handed out for free, grab it here.  There’s an excellent writeup over on the Six Degrees blog Global Noize so check that out too.The EP hits the shelves September 8th so keep a lookout over at Record Label, check that link for full audio previews also.

Kush Arora – The Dread Bass Chronicles

Kush Arora - The Dread Bass ChroniclesComing out tomorrow on (4/21) is the fourth studio album from Kush Arora, a San Francisco based DJ in the Surya Dub crew and producer.  Surya Dub’s monthly event at Club Six has consistently been awarded reader prizes by local magazines and never fails to get me dancing. I’m going to keep this one brief since it was also written up recently in Big Up Magazine and SFWeekly but just want to mention that if you’re into people like Disrupt, Midival Punditz, and Stephen “di genius” McGregor, then you NEED to get on this album.  The list of MCs on the album is impressive: Warrior Queen, Bongo Chilli, Juakali, MC Zulu, N4SA, and Wiseproof.  This album is more on the dancehall tip than dubstep but the synths used cause it to end up sounding like a fusion of the two.   Don’t sleep, and come check out the CD Release Party at Elbo Room on the 26th.

Kush Arora ft Juakali – Come From Yard

First off, Kush apparently (based on the SFWeekly post) is kind enough to give away his version of “Come From Yard” featuring Juakali which is one of the best tracks on the album and gets stuck in my head like super glue.  Stream it below or download it directly here.

Kush Arora ft MC Zulu – Lose Control

The next song is a dancefloor rocker in the 140bpm range called “Lose Control” with MC Zulu.  This song does an excellent job of blending dubstep and dancehall styles into something new, and I like that new thing.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Kush Arora ft Bongo Chilli – Wine Mek Me See You

The last song I’d like to preview is more straight ahead dancehall and features Bongo Chilli on the mic.  Two other songs on the album use this riddim making it the most represented with three tracks (the others are with Wiseproof and MC Zulu).  I can’t get enough of the hook in this riddim, big respects.
