The Spit Brothers mix it up for 2010

Bakir & Dubsworth form The Spit Brothers, a duo based in San Francisco focusing on the use of live instruments in bass music who just put out a mix for 2010 that has more exclusives than a Washington DC dinner party.  The two are prolific and write excellent music using Dubsworth’s guitar skills & Bakir’s various talents on instruments like the clavinet, trumpet, flugelhorn, and keys.  Oh, and also bass.  Lots of bass.  Highlights on this come from their own label Dubs Alive along with releases on Brap Dem, Full Melt and Sub Life.  Lots of the tracks on this are slated for release on a Spit Brothers full-length album coming sometime in the future so keep your eyes out for that one.

This music draws from all sounds: synthesizers, samples, instruments, vocals, pretty much anything.  For your eardrums.  Click the arrow on the widget below to download this one.

Dubstepped Radio Episode 002

Dubstepped Radio

I’d like to start off this week with a new episode of dubstepped radio.  I’m really excited about this episode, it’s got five styles of dubstep from jazz saxophones to hiphop to wobbly tunes.  It’s a pleasure to discuss tunes in a genre as diverse as dubstep, always keeps you on your toes.  This episode clocks in at just over 74 minutes with 23 tracks.

There’s a bunch of free music associated with this episode: Juju – Young Girl, Mastodon Tricycle – Lead Chips EP, Kid Simple – Ruthless (promo for Seattle Selections), Dumbsteppaz – Southern Fried Dub, and Elucid – My Mayor is a Billionaire plus Laser Days.  Get after those, some serious tunes.

Next episode should be up early July.  Send promos to snfdubstepped on aim or snf@dubstepped.net and I’ll give ‘em a listen.  I’m also open to including guest mixes so if you’re a DJ/producer and want to add your own flavor to the program contact me.  Bigup all involved.

Two Fresh Releases with Live Instruments (Bakir & Dubsworth, Overcast Radio)

Live instrumentation provides a sound that’s really hard to capture using typical electronic production methods which is nice to hear in dubstep.  I’ve got a couple fresh releases here demonstrating this, Dubs Alive 003 with Bakir (trumpet) & Dubsworth (guitar) and Surface Tension 002 from Overcast Radio (guitar, rhodes), Michael Leonhart (trumpet) & Daniel Carter (sax).  The styles in these two are very diverse from aggy dancefloor beats to post-rock influenced dubstep to jazzy, spacy sounds.  Straight to the releases which are both available online, with a digital release of Overcast Radio slated for June 18.

Dubs Alive 003 – Bakir & Dubsworth

Dubs Alive 003

First up is the most recent Dubs Alive release with both the label and musicians coming from San Francisco.  Bakir & Dubsworth come with three styles on this one, each with various live instrumentation.

Bakir & Dubsworth – Gatekeepers

The first track on this release is “Gatekeepers,” an 8 minute long evolution of sound that really reminds me of work by Godspeed You Black Emperor or Mice Parade, except in a dubstep style.  Definitely a new flavor for me.

Dubsworth ft. Bakir – Dirty Suthin

Next up is a big wobbler with spacy guitar and ambient trumpet effects which come together to create a serious dancefloor tune.  I love how the wobble plays off the guitar in this one, nicely done.  Look for this one in the next Dubstepped Radio podcast coming soon.

Bakir ft. Dubsworth – Score

The guitar in this one sounds like it came from a late 70s blaxploitation film crossed with Rockers.  Nice the upbeat guitars crossed with the rugged ambient synth holding things together.

Surface Tension 002 – Overcast Radio ft Michael Leonhart and Daniel Carter

Surface Tension 002This next one is from Surface Tension Recordings based out of Indianapolis featuring the productions of Overcast Radio (Chris Jones) out of Brooklyn.  I can’t get enough of this music to be honest, and am not the only one.  It’s impossible to listen to this without feeling like you’re wandering down some moonlit street, maybe in the rain, on the hunt for clues.

Overcast Radio – Midnight Sun

The ambiance in this song is amazing, and the imagery it evokes is powerful.  One for the thinkers and the late night crew.  Put this on when you’re driving home after a night out, guaranteed to fit the mood.

Overcast Radio – Vendetta

My pick of the two is the b-side with gorgeous sax from Daniel Carter and a complex, rolling bassline.  There’s been lots of discussion recently about the sounds used to make basslines and this is a perfect example of excellent sound design when choosing bass notes, at least in my opinion.  The way this rolls out of my speakers is perfect and the sound it makes is positive and uplifting. If you get this one digitally get it in FLAC or you’ll be missing out.

DLX and Merlow – Cool Blue bw Free Bass DAV002

Dubs Alive 002San Francisco based Dubs Alive records comes with their second release again featuring the use of live instruments in dubstep. This one has a jazzy feel with tracks from DLX and Merlow featuring Giuliano Pizzulo on the electric bass. Anyone who’s seen Rusko’s live performance with resampled electric bass and drum loops should take note – dubstep with live instruments is not to be dismissed.

DLX from Los Angeles showcases his excellent snare construction with drums that hit harder than mid-90s jungle and a mutilated vocal sample that reminds me of “Here Comes the Hotstepper.” Mellow track overall, something to vibe to.

Merlow (no, not Marlow) also from LA comes with a different style on the second track with grimy effected out bass and a plethora of percussion layers. The lead synth and percussive nature of the track takes me back to some old Squarepusher, notably Hard Normal Daddy.

Antiserum, Bakir, and Dubsworth EP on Dubs Alive

Dubsalive - Click for full artThis EP is the first release on San Francisco based Dubs Alive Records – DAV001. It features Antiserum & Dubsworth on the A, and Bakir & Dubsworth on the AA, if you can even call it that when it’s digital. All three tracks have live instruments played by the performers, which gives this release a unique feel among dubstep.

The first track “Ugly Mon” from Antiserum and Dubsworth is a some bang your head business, a metal stepper complete with guitar riffs courtesy Dubsworth. This tune is definitely on the dirty side for me but I could totally see it going off in a club. Fans of DZ, Distance, 16 Bit, Ripple, Roommate, etc should definitely check this.

The meat of this three-tune sandwich for me is “Pudding Pop.” Liberally applied effects on the trumpet and snares dub this one to outer space and the wobble keeps it bubblin’. Reminds me of Kanka or a more upbeat Rhythm & Sound. This song’s a personal. Rec’d if you like Clouds, Kanka, Radikal Guru, the WAR series, and related. Dubby live trumpet played by Bakir.

Rounding out the EP is “Casus Belly” which is basically a cross between the first two. Dubby effects and Bakir on the clavinet carry you into the tune where you’re met by ravey synths and a four-on-the-floor to take you out. I was curious about the name so I asked Ric (Bakir) about it who told me that it’s a pun on the latin phrase “casus belli” which means the justifications for the starting a war. I don’t think dubstep is going to start any wars soon though, fortunately. Rec’s similar to the first one, though to be honest I’m not sure there is much in this vein. Really original work. Would kill as a transition track between dubstep and bassline.
