Dubs Alive 006 with The Spit Brothers, Luthor, Djunya and a free DL

The latest out on the San Francisco imprint Dubs Alive is this diverse 5 track EP with originals from The Spit Brothers and Luthor, and with Bakir, Djunya and 6blocc on remix duties.  The original “No Curfew” is a spooky, basswise tune that’s like a soundtrack to a new Dick Tracy film. Eerie keys create a brooding mood that the ultradeep bassline strongly reinforces. If you’re listening to this on headphones trust you’re missing out on half the song on the low end. Things get hectic in the second half, getting hyper with a 4×4 beat making this a strong transition song between sounds.

Djunya steps up next to tackle a remix of “No Curfew”, adding more swagger to the beat but maintaining the eerie feel of the original with keys and brass. When the main bit drops in this becomes an incredible remix with doubled up kicks and added synths overtop. Guaranteed to light up a dance.

Out of the five songs on the release the only one that doesn’t work is the 6blocc remix where the vibe of the original is entirely lost in an attempt to reproduce Bombaman-esque bass sounds that falls way short. Feels far too cookie cutter.

Luthor brings the next original with his emotive, bass heavy sound. Complex beats and a nice atmosphere built by Luthor make this one a quality late night or Sunday morning tune, matching elements of the jazzy sound found in many Dubs Alive releases.  On the remix of this one Bakir comes with a funky/soca styled beat under the keys and vocals of the original. The original mix is pretty mellow, this one is purely hyper. Intensity.

Along with these, Dubs Alive have put out another tune for free download, this one called “Done Gone There.” Download this one using the player below, then check the full DAV006 release using the second player.

The Spit Brothers – King Me (Free DL)

The Spit Brothers (Web, Soundcloud) recently decided to drop this funkified dubstep tune for free via their soundcloud – get on it.  Dubsworth on the guitar nails it on this one. Bassline’s a roller with upbeat guitar and funky keys keeping it going.  Jazz dubstep as they say in the genre tag sums it up perfectly. Music for a mystery film or a car chase courtesy their label Dubs Alive. Look out for more gems coming soon on Dubs Alive including a massive release with remixes from Djunya & 6blocc.

Get to know about Simple.

This program has the first in a series of features on producers, starting off with Simple.  Simple is based in San Francisco, heads up the netlabel Two Circles Records, and has forthcoming releases on a few labels.  I first heard about him at the recommendation of fellow contributor Shortstack who couldn’t stop listening to his “Casual Sex” release on Two Circles last fall.  I got hooked as well.

Check out his Soundcloud page for more audio and a bunch of free downloads.  The “Fall Around The Cut EP” should be out on Ilian Tape next week or so so look out for that one.  Simple was kind enough to do a little interview also, so read about what makes him tick below.

SNF: Lets set it off with a little introduction, how’d you get into production?

Simple: Well, I have the typical story of my youth being filled with music and etc. Started playing the drums, piano and guitar at a young age, never really took it serious but loved making noise. Growing up around Detroit I was introduced to electronica at a fairly young age and at that age, was specifically, very in to turntabalism. When I was 11 I received one turntable, a mixer and an invisible scratch pickles VHS, so I could learn how to scratch. Goofed around with that for a couple years, got another deck got into Dj’ing more and more, then at about age 18, I just stopped. I became fascinated again with the guitar, this time it would take me overseas to London, where I studied for a bit. I got into production because I needed something to back my guitar. I had always fooled around with production, but in 2005 I really started producing my own tracks. At that point it was all guitar based music. It wasn’t until 2007 that I started producing more electronic oriented music.

The Spit Brothers mix it up for 2010

Bakir & Dubsworth form The Spit Brothers, a duo based in San Francisco focusing on the use of live instruments in bass music who just put out a mix for 2010 that has more exclusives than a Washington DC dinner party.  The two are prolific and write excellent music using Dubsworth’s guitar skills & Bakir’s various talents on instruments like the clavinet, trumpet, flugelhorn, and keys.  Oh, and also bass.  Lots of bass.  Highlights on this come from their own label Dubs Alive along with releases on Brap Dem, Full Melt and Sub Life.  Lots of the tracks on this are slated for release on a Spit Brothers full-length album coming sometime in the future so keep your eyes out for that one.

This music draws from all sounds: synthesizers, samples, instruments, vocals, pretty much anything.  For your eardrums.  Click the arrow on the widget below to download this one.
