Review: Falty DL – Phreqaflex (ZIQ277)

Large new rhythms again from NYC-based producer Falty DL on the long-time trendsetting label Planet Mu. This release comes as a three track 12″ and digital released a few weeks ago. I have been following Drew Lustman’s work under the ‘Falty DL’ since discovering his Bravery EP last year, and being enamored by unique sounds atypical of most stateside based producers. It is quite logical that a majority of his releases have found a home on the renowned Planet Mu label, seemingly always one step ahead of the curve in underground electronic music.

The title track ‘Phreqaflex’ opens the release with an unrelenting garage drum pattern underneath smooth keys and two distinct yet similar bass rhythms in a style that is undoubtably a head-nod to unmistakable shuffle of Horsepower Productions. Lustman makes the production clearly his own through the use of melodic off-kilter rhodes and rave-pianoesque stabs throughout the tune, providing a more light-hearted feel than the sheer darkness typical of much of Horsepower’s catalog. Continuing the first side is the even more soulful “My Friends Will Always Say” expounding on the mood set forth by the first track, adding a smooth sexy dancefloor vibe on top of the shuffled beat and pulsating claps that would undoubtedly fill any floor that has any semblance of a pulse. The release closes with the b-side’s single track “Because You.” a keyboard driven garage tune with spaced out vocals and heavy employment of reverb to provide a warm soundstage to juxtapose the unmistakably sharp cold drum patterns that are the hallmark of the UK Garage sound.

Phreqaflex as a release is no disappointment, continuing high expectations set from Lustman’s previous releases. Clearly Falty DL’s  sound has grown and “found it’s niche” so to speak. Drawing heavily on the influences of the darker sounds of UK Garage, Falty DL continues to provide us with refreshing modern interpretations on the Garage sounds that served as the building blocks for much  of today’s “bass music” movement. The tracks here are quick, and to the point which seems consistent with the clear coherence of Lustman’s recent productions.

A must-bag for any fan of the El-B, and Horsepower Productions, Phreqaflex is available in all fine shops as a 12″and digital release.

Review: Comma – Carry the Fire EP (SEMI009)

Out Tuesday is the debut release from San Francisco producer Comma, who has put together a five track EP of innovative music that is satisfying to both heads and dancefloors alike.  Sounds on this are coming from the intersection of dubstep/bass, garage, IDM, and music sent back from the future in a reverse time capsule.  Loving it.  On top of this, Coyote is a free download from Comma, so get that one today.  Pick the rest up at Juno, Addictech or other digital retailers starting Tuesday.

Artwork & graphic design on this come from DJG and each track has an individual  image (one pictured to the right).  Check DJG’s blog linked above for an excellent review of this one also.  Here’s three samples:

Sines – Sonic Love Cycle

Valentine’s day is a buzz with new sounds.  Mixes with titles about love and producers from the deeper side of dubstep are popping up all over.  I’d like to highlight three here today, the first from Sines of Formant Recordings.  This mix isn’t strictly positive tunes per se, but an attempt by Sines to capture all emotions associated with love, some of which aren’t necessarily happy.  The sounds inside this mix are the new new, with big representation from VVV (look out for this man 2010), and heat from Deadboy, Roska, Cosmic Revenge, FBOM, and Cooly G.

Head over to Formant Recordings to show some love and download this one.

Holiday Bass Presents – Eleven Free Downloads

MusicI thought I’d hand out a bunch of treats for the holidays and new year that have been coming from all over the place.  All manner of dubstep and related music here.  Along with all the tracks in this post if you click the image it will take you to the “free tunes” tag, which is every post I’ve ever made with free music associated.  Get after that!  Mad respect to all people that put out tunes for free.

These two from Knowa KnowOne of the Muti music family are a taste of what’s to come from a new EP he’s putting out on 1320 early next year.  This is a new direction in dubstep with a little faster tempo and synths that harken back to the g-funk hiphop era.  Feeling these.

Knowa KnowOne ft Sleepyhead – Killa Tune

Drake & Lil Wayne – Forever (Knowa KnowOne’s Thugstep Remix)

Next up we have more in the thugstep or hiphop remix vein from DJ Solo of the Soul Assassins crew, with first an entire pack of remixes he’s done.  This is a compilation of unmixed tunes, not all dubstep, but some serious jams inside.  Solo was kind enough to include two more mashups/remixes including MIA and the “first ever Polka-step track.”  Get on it!

DJ Solo – My MPC Is a Pipe Bomb (compilation)

Boys In The Basement (DJ SOLO RMX) – DJ SOLO x Reso x MIA

Kiss Me I’m Polish (DJ SOLO REMIX) – DJ SOLO

Along with all this thugstep I should definitely mention this recent mixtape from DJ Cable @ Rock the Dub that’s tops as far as this hiphop dubstep crossover goes.  Definitely get this one in your ears.

DJ Cable x Rock The Dub Fuck Thugstep Vol. 1

Now for some jazzy, 2steppy vibes from Cosmic Revenge in the form of an older tune that he’s put out for free.  Shuffly beats, deep basslines, and a nice sax riff make this one a big tune.

Cosmic Revenge – On The Block

Along similar lines I have to mention the Soundcloud of this cat Materielle from Urbana, Il where you can get no less than 8 tracks for free.  These highly recommended for fans of dark, minimal garage a la Burial, Kode9 and such.  I’m just going to link to his entire soundcloud, tons of free bits inside.

Materielle on Soundcloud

Now steppin in the harder direction with a free tune from Roommate and El Diablo out thanks to MalLabel.  Roommate just put out the Strong Vibes EP on MalLabel which you can grab here.  This is a five track release and MalLabel is putting out the El Diablo remix for free… freemix?

Roommate – Strong Vibes (El Diablo Remix)

Now for some futuristic sounds from Misk and Polyshufflez thanks to Big Up’s Dubs Friday series.  I don’t post most of the free tunes they put out, but am including this one to make sure people know about the quality releases that they send out every Friday.  Check these:

Big Up Dubs Friday (12/18 edition)

And the last one that I’m going to include is a bit older (all the way from the end of November oh my…) but something that I slept on.  This one, Dubsworth vs Bakir (aka the Spit Brothers) with a remix by DZ put out free thanks to Badman Press.  Scope the link with full info on all producers involved here, along with links to free Wav and MP3 downloads.

Dubsworth ft Bakir – Not the One (incl DZ Remix)

And that’s gonna do it for the free tunes for now!!!  Happy Holidays & New Year to everyone.  Look forward to the new year!!

Sines – That Thing She Does and Forsaken Remix free from Formant Recordings

These two tracks just released FOR FREE courtesy Sines, Forsaken, and Formant Recordings. Get to know about these people, absolutely big sounds on these tracks. Melodic, organic sounds over shuffly basswise beats leading to a gorgeous composition. This is only free out of the kindness of Sines & Forsaken, these could easily be sold.

Get to listening:

Download these @ Formant’s Soundcloud.
