Review: Comma – Carry the Fire EP (SEMI009)

Out Tuesday is the debut release from San Francisco producer Comma, who has put together a five track EP of innovative music that is satisfying to both heads and dancefloors alike.  Sounds on this are coming from the intersection of dubstep/bass, garage, IDM, and music sent back from the future in a reverse time capsule.  Loving it.  On top of this, Coyote is a free download from Comma, so get that one today.  Pick the rest up at Juno, Addictech or other digital retailers starting Tuesday.

Artwork & graphic design on this come from DJG and each track has an individual  image (one pictured to the right).  Check DJG’s blog linked above for an excellent review of this one also.  Here’s three samples:

Eskmo – Hypercolor EP

Eskmo - Hypercolor EPThe third release on Eskmo’s Ancestor label based out of San Francisco is this four-track Hypercolor EP out April 7.  You gotta love the title and cover art – out to the crew that had hypercolor shirts (and then ruined them in the dryer). Eskmo (aka Welder) has always been of the experimental ilk and this is no exception, but don’t interpret the word “experimental” as not being dancefloor-friendly or listenable. This EP artfully walks the line between experimental and dancefloor music producing something that is refreshing in dubstep.

All the cuts on this EP feature complex sound spaces shaped by a mastery of synthesizers and ambiance.  The title song is a grimy tune with either a 3/4 or triplet-based rhythm which has an excellent feel.  The second track “San Francisco (The Rhythm)” is a prime example of ambiance mastery with noises that are reminiscent of some Rube Goldberg robot marching along to the beat with an arsenal of guitars, pots and pans, cowbells, digital chimes, triangles, and heavy machinery.  “I Dream I’m Flying” is a contender for best on the EP with IDM-like clicks in the intro leading up to a synth that belongs in the late 70s and a HUGE drop that’s got me dancing as I write.  The last piece entitled “We Have Invisible Friends” is definitely my favorite though.  A mysterious intro builds tension until it’s relieved almost halfway into the song with a gorgeous melody over excellent percussion work.  This last one is a must listen as far as I’m concerned.

For me this EP is a very strong union of IDM and dubstep which definitely clicks.  Respect to Eskmo.  Now for two samples:
