Steppin into Tomorrow with SNF 042 08.30.10 on Dubstep.FM

This program is packed with the sound that has been so influential to me over the last year or so – UK funky house & its derivatives. Dubstep.FM has been a great host station to me but as the diversity of things I’ve been playing grows it’s clear that I should move to a station that isn’t all dubstep. The tracklist from this episode is a prime example.

For these reasons I’m proud to announce that the show will be moving to Sub.FM starting soon. The time is going to remain the same but the day is going to change to Tuesdays. Otherwise things will be the same with tracklists posted here & at soundcloud and podcasts sent out as normal. I still plan on playing dubstep, but I’ll be adding more funky house and new dnb sounds. Forward!

Sam Supa – Dub Machine (Exclusive Mix)

Sam Supa (Brapdem, Grime City, Surefire) described this mix as “a true spectrum of all the Dubstep I play and what is good in music right now” and I have to agree.  Straight out the gates it’s serious with Wachs Lyrical’s “Fear VIP,” but that’s just a foreshadowing of what’s to come as it fades into deeper tunes.  Constantly through the mix Sam is taking you on a journey, in and out of darkness, showcasing various vibes in dance music.  This to me is what makes a good mix, flexing all aspects of music to produce something that cycles in and out of intensity.  I was thinking about this at the recent “Hardly Strictly Bluegrass” festival here in San Francisco where the musicians also used mellow, sparse introductions juxtaposed with more beat-heavy danceable sections to get people in the groove.  I feel like this is fundamental to well-executed dance music and this mix is a very good example.

Highlights of this for me are the intro from Wachs Lyrical, the DJG collaborations with XI and Headhunter, Eprom’s robotic glitchy track “Humanoid,” Eskmo’s bit off the Hypercolor EP (look for more from him soon on Planet Mu), Zeno’s fresh track and a Brapdem signing “Lazer Wolf 2010,” Djunya’s metallic, primal dancehall killer “Full Circle,” and Kozee’s 20,000 leagues deep tune “Sugar Loaf.”  After Kozee comes James Blake’s “Air & Lack Thereof” and this may be the best blend into the track I’ve ever heard, perfect example of going from one vibe to another seamlessly.

Featured in this mix is Skulltrane’s “This One Called Dub,” recently out on MalLabel.  They also distributed a couple free MP3s with this release, fans of the dirty sound should check these out:

Mellow Mixes for Sunday

A pair of mixes today from KidLogic from LA and J. Rogers of Blipswitch here in SF.  Both are on the deeper side of things and are perfect for chilling out on a Sunday.  Been rinsing them pretty heavily myself, just getting around to posting them up now.

KidLogic – Mix for Sundays

First up is KidLogic’s “Mix for Sundays” which is an adventure through styles from dubstep to funky and the wonderful ground in between.  Big tunes in the mix and the blending is excellent.  Check out his virb player for recent productions, highly recommended.  This mix is exclusive to dubstepped thanks to KL, respect.  Check out his shows on dubstep.fm if you’re enjoying this one, he’s usually on the Supernormous Sessions.

Sam Supa – Darkness and Hype – Brap Dem Promo Mix

This new mix from Sam Supa (Grime City, Brap Dem) is a diverse and quality selection of fresh dubstep tunes.  The mixing is excellent, Sam is a pro blender (KitchenAid quality).  Lots of big tunes on this one but my favorites are Von D – Show Me, Kial – Bell Curve, and Jakes – Custard Cream.  This one’s dangerous.  Download & enjoy, then come see Sam live in action tonight or at the next Grime City.

Big Up Magazine – Spring 2009

Big Up Magazine - Spring 2009I got my Spring copy of Big Up Magazine from Katya at the Surefire monthly last Saturday and finished reading it last night.  Well-designed and packed with 13 interviews with diverse artists and musicians it’s a good read.  The words of Goth-Trad were the most captivating to me.  His description of the status of dubstep in Japan and his musical evolution was really a fun read especially because I didn’t know that much about him.  Mary Anne Hobbs also had a great interview focusing on the “West Coast Rocks” sound of Flying Lotus, Lazer Sword, The Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus, Nobody, the Glitch Mob and others.  Artwise, Nik Ainley’s pieces really stuck out as quality, though all the art was quite good.  Putting visually-stunning art in between the music interviews is a nice contrast as you go back and forth between thinking about the audio and visual worlds.

Nik Ainley - Headache

My reading of the magazine would be interrupted every so often by the quality of Kutz’s selections coming out my speakers on the included mix.  Kutz is a sick producer and DJ based out of the UK with two stellar recent releases on Soul Jazz (Drumz of No Return / Tarantula and Travelling / Static).  Big things coming from him on the dubplate front too.

Any set that starts off with Benga vs Kutz – I’ll Kut Ya you know is gonna be good.  Personals were Skream – Filth (Silkie remix), Kutz – Grit Ya Teeth, Von D. feat Phephe – Show Me, and Klic feat Alys Be – Move Me.  Alys Be seems to have a knack for working with people that I’ve yet to hear and producing huge tunes with them.  Massive respect.  Check out a recent edition of the Transition show on Rinse.FM featuring Alys Be on the mic in studio.  Silkie is doing huge things at the moment also with tunes out like Techno 22, Headbutt the Decks, and the his remix of Tell Me (also ft Alys Be).

Big Up is available in SF at Babylon Falling, Amoeba, Super7, or Smoke Signals, or via the website at bigupmagazine.com.  Big Up is also hosting a third launch party soon featuring Emalkay’s first US appearance.. should be most excellent.

Finally I have to mention this killer new proposal in the magazine which is to promote creation of music videos for dubstep by establishing a dubstep video community.  I think this is an excellent idea and hope that it takes off.  Here’s two of the first submissions, the first by Big Up contributor MZO:

Nephilim – Ill Cativo (ekaj Remix)

ekaj

Nephilim

This tune is a club banger courtesy Nephilim out of Hollywood and ekaj from the other side of the pond in Lancaster, UK.  The original (see Nephilim’s virb player) is a really dark tune which is remixed nicely by ekaj.  Thickened snares and extra percussion hype up the original and take it to a new level.  Recommended if you like Breakage, Distance, Kutz, or some of Skream’s darker work.  Big it!
