Review: Marcus Visionary – Carib Album (LNDBLP001D)

Marcus Visionary hailing from Toronto has been producing a sound for a while that he calls “Sub Soca” and has released two EPs riddled with it.  This album out now on Liondub International is the culmination, a collection of 27 tracks that range from the intense sub soca styles of “St. Vincent”, “Belize City” and “Surinam”, to wobbly dubstep tracks like “In the VIP”, or “London”, a 2step feel with “Left Food Skank” and some conscious dubstep vibes on “Nightfall” and “Coffee or Tea.”  The music on this album is what it’s all about in dance music for me currently: bass heavy, syncopated rhythms that just make you want to jump and prance.  Almost impossible for me to sit still while I write this.  This release is high quality and is worth buying regardless, but thanks to Liondub International you can pick up all 27 tracks for a wallet-friendly $14.  I’ve selected some favorites below or click the Juno link at the end of the post for full audio previews.

Marcus Visionary – Carib EP (Liondub International)

Marcus Visionary comes with a different ting on the “Carib EP” out soon on Liondub International.  Included are three new bits and three tracks that are out on various singles.  This EP is a preview of what will be out on the longer, 23 track Carib LP out late this November.  The three released tracks (“The General” remix, “Black Panther”, and “In the VIP” out friday) are definitely worth a listen if you haven’t heard them yet.  “In the VIP” is when the so-called Sub-Soca flex comes in with whistles and a 4×4 beat under some growly dubsteppy synths.

This Sub-Soca style (first heard for me on the “Mama So Divine” remix) brings a whole new sound to the table.  Toronto’s Marcus Visionary has perfected it with the release of the Carib EP, likely to be expanded on the Carib LP.  “Left Foot Skank” has a nice, early dubstep-era wobble over a syncopated beat, but the shining track of the EP for me is “St. Vincent” when the wobble is thrown to the wind and replaced by upbeat claps, whistles, and cowbells.  Something about upbeat percussion always grabs me and I’m bubblin as I write.  Dancefloor in a club with this tune on is gonna be mobbed.  The third new entry is a collaboration on the roots dubstep tip with legendary vocalist Johnny Osbourne and production help from Liondub, feelin this one as well.

This EP is out soon on Liondub International.  Check Juno, Chemical, Boomkat and other quality music shops, I’ll update this when I see it drop.  For now, “In the VIP” is shipping this week at Redeye or Chemical.

Jahdan Blakkamoore – The General, Buzzrock Warrior, and more

Jahdan Blakkamoore of the Dutty Artz crew caught my eye (ear?) a while ago but I’ve been hooked ever since the XLR8R Full Hundred podcast mixed by Matt Shadetek. There’s strictly fire on this mix, and since it came out many of the tunes have been picked up and a full album has been announced.  I’d like to preview some tunes with Jahdan on the mic, he’s one to watch this year.  The entire Dutty Artz family with their New York Tropical sound are on something delightful and I’ll definitely be keeping a look out for more of this new flavor of music.

Jahdan Blakkamoore – The General (Liondub International)

I featured the original of The General and a remix by Portland’s Noah D in my last podcast and really can’t get enough of it. Four versions total on the 12″ release: the original, the Noah D remix, the Marcus Visionary remix, and the acapella. This is a sampler off the LP Buzzrock Warrior due out soon.  This to me is a perfect blend of reggae lyrics with a dubby beat.  Jahdan control the whole entire district.  You can pick your flavor of choice between these three versions:

Long Road (forthcoming The Agriculture)

I’ve only heard short clips of the original but this sounds like another solid reggae production from Liondub & Jahdan with conscious lyrics and an excellent rhythm. Then came Shadetek with the remix (which I think starts at about 27 seconds in this clip from the XLR8R podcast) and transformed the original via a relentless synth and monster halftime beat. I’ve been trying to hunt down info on this one and happily just heard that it’s slated to come out on The Agriculture next month. Salute!

Major Lazer – Cash Flow (Downtown)

Diplo & Switch’s project “Major Lazer” has been getting lots of hype including many remixes of “Hold the Line” after they put out the acapella with Mr. Lexx. The full-length LP is an eclectic collection of songs of various bass-related genres with many guest vocalists.  This one featuring Jahdan was made available for free via /rupture’s blog (negrophonic.com).  It’s lyrically solid and ends with a nice synth horn bit, good rootsy tune.

Download this tune.

Lastly I gotta give a shoutout to Dutty Artz, Shadetek, DJ /Rupture, Geko Jones, and Jahdan’s forthcoming album Buzzrock Warrior due out this September.  It features Modeselektor, Maga Bo, Durrty Goodz, Chancha Via Circuito, 77Klash, Abena Koomson, and others.  The General is a sampler for this which, if that’s any indication, will make this an album to remember.  The General is out now on Liondub International, Noble Society – Take Charge (LP) featuring Jahdan out on Lustre Kings, We Are Radiers on Dutty Artz, and Heartbroken with Liondub and Noah D on the remix out yesterday on Earwax.  Look out also for Marcus Visionary’s soca/kuduro flavored remix of Noble Society – Mama So Divine out soon on Liondub International.  Forward!

Dubstepped Radio Episode 002

Dubstepped Radio

I’d like to start off this week with a new episode of dubstepped radio.  I’m really excited about this episode, it’s got five styles of dubstep from jazz saxophones to hiphop to wobbly tunes.  It’s a pleasure to discuss tunes in a genre as diverse as dubstep, always keeps you on your toes.  This episode clocks in at just over 74 minutes with 23 tracks.

There’s a bunch of free music associated with this episode: Juju – Young Girl, Mastodon Tricycle – Lead Chips EP, Kid Simple – Ruthless (promo for Seattle Selections), Dumbsteppaz – Southern Fried Dub, and Elucid – My Mayor is a Billionaire plus Laser Days.  Get after those, some serious tunes.

Next episode should be up early July.  Send promos to snfdubstepped on aim or snf@dubstepped.net and I’ll give ‘em a listen.  I’m also open to including guest mixes so if you’re a DJ/producer and want to add your own flavor to the program contact me.  Bigup all involved.
