V/A – Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space (Reviewed)

Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space

“This project has taken over a year to put together from its conception late last summer. The final results are worth every minute of effort that’s gone into this – this is definitely my proudest moment for Tectonic to date. The influence of dub swings round full circle!” -Pinch

I know I am not the only one who was drawn to dubstep by spending formative years of my youth listening to reggae albums, especially dub. Honestly, Scientist has always been a personal favorite; no disrespect to King Tubby for being the originator and no disrespect to Mad Professor for embracing new technologies in an old sound however Scientist seemed to always sit perfectly in the middle of the proto, and the present. His “Vampires” and “World Cup” releases having left the biggest impression on me, even still today. Obviously, I’m absolutely enthralled that this release exists and even more having an opportunity to listen to these tracks and relay some early impressions on them back to readers.

Attempting my hardest to stay away from clichéd idioms when writing this review, it is difficult to approach speaking about specific tracks on this release without emphasizing “the sum is greater than the parts.” Honestly, this is something that I hope listeners appreciate start-to-finish as much as selectors and dancers will appreciate hearing singles played in DJ sets, or even more excitingly the upcoming UK tour with Scientist to support the album’s release.

Dubblestandart – Chrome Optimism (free DL, show tonight!)

Dubblestandart, Subatomic Sound and a gang of remix artists team up on “Chrome Optimism” with legends David Lynch and Lee Scratch Perry (both pictured smoking various dried leaves to the right).  The original Dubblestandart mix is robotic roots reggae with somewhat random interjections from Lynch overtop. The remix action is where this gets serious, with very strong work from Kush Arora, Antiserum & Bakir, Subatomic Sound and more. Check below for a nice video of the Subatomic Sound remix exploring the desert overtop the beat, fits quite well.

The Subatomic Sound and original radio mix are available for free download via the player below thanks to Emch & Subatomic Sound. If you’re in the Bay Area, both Dubblestandard and Subatomic Sound are headlining the weekly Dub Mission down at Elbo Room, so get yourself down there.

Review: Marcus Visionary – Carib Album (LNDBLP001D)

Marcus Visionary hailing from Toronto has been producing a sound for a while that he calls “Sub Soca” and has released two EPs riddled with it.  This album out now on Liondub International is the culmination, a collection of 27 tracks that range from the intense sub soca styles of “St. Vincent”, “Belize City” and “Surinam”, to wobbly dubstep tracks like “In the VIP”, or “London”, a 2step feel with “Left Food Skank” and some conscious dubstep vibes on “Nightfall” and “Coffee or Tea.”  The music on this album is what it’s all about in dance music for me currently: bass heavy, syncopated rhythms that just make you want to jump and prance.  Almost impossible for me to sit still while I write this.  This release is high quality and is worth buying regardless, but thanks to Liondub International you can pick up all 27 tracks for a wallet-friendly $14.  I’ve selected some favorites below or click the Juno link at the end of the post for full audio previews.

Review: Nate Mars – Concentric Circles LP with a FREE download

Nate Mars coming out of New York comes with a reggae-infused dubstep offering with his album Concentric Circles out now on Blipswitch.  The album explores a variety of sounds but keeps a consistent heavy, fuzzed out and sometimes wobbly bassline.  The instrumentals are complemented by a host of vocalists from New York and abroad including Juakali, Jahdan Blakkamoore and Junior Culture.  I’m just going to sample a few tracks here, click the cover image or the Juno link below to hear previews of the full album.

Nate Mars ft Juakali – Horizon

Juakali really shines in this track with haunting vocals over a syncopated beat complete with a heavy bassline and echoed sax.  Large.

Nate Mars – Higher to the Bass

Higher to the bass and higher to the treble on this one with a distorted lead synth taking you through alongside some horns.  Feels to me like the lead synth is dancing around the beat keeping it fresh.

Nate Mars ft Jahdan Blakkamoore – Praylude

The build in this one is epic but is left out of this preview, trust that it’s serious.  When the bass first hits it’s like a tsunami – this is a formidable intro tune to be sure.

Nate Mars ft Jahdan Blakkamoore – Above and Beyond Dem (Download)

Last up is the free tune coming from a collabo between Nate Mars and Jahdan, this one I’ve been seriously into for a while now.  The instrumental from Mars hits hard, and the lyrics from Jahdan are among his best.  Download and enjoy this one thanks to Nate Mars & Blipswitch.

Dub Gabriel ft U-Roy plus FREE Ming vs Subatomic Sound System Remix

Dub Gabriel just collaborated with the toasting legend U-Roy to produce this dubwise tune Luv n’Liv.  Conscious lyrics flow over a futuristic dubwise beat on this one taking dub in a whole new direction.  Then come a whole host of remixes from Ming (of Ming & FS) vs Subatomic Sound, Timeblind, Lloop and the Dub Gabriel Roots Rewind remix.  The Ming vs Subatomic remix is free for DL if you just click the button on the widget below.  All these mixes are nice but I gotta put my money on the Timeblind one.  Big release.
This one out March 9 on Destroy All Concepts.  Keep a look out.
