Zeno – Red Dragon Mix

Zeno just put together this excellent mix “Red Dragon” for mass consumption.  It weaves in and out of mellow dubwise selections and dubstep that will mop the floor with your face and is packed with original productions from Zeno himself.  Truly excellent blends in this one too.  Look out for the wolves inside, there’s two of them and they have lasers.  Zeno said that he’s put his blood, sweat and tears into this one and it shows.

If you’re in the Denver area look for Zeno playing out at Sub.Mission or the Denver Surefire chapter.  For those in the bay we’ll get a taste this July.  Full list of future shows here, and click here to download this mix.

Review: SFS002 – El Presidente / Putney Says

SureFire Sound is back with installment 002 to their label, following an exciting release from Eprom and FaltyDL with SFS001, this release goes even more over the top bringing four of the front running producers in dubstep on a single release.

Side A brings the combination of San Francisco based Djunya, alongside Bristol native Headhunter on “El Presidente” I was fortunate to first hear this tune rinsed out by Djunya during Atlanta’s Dub_ocracy Festival in early summer of last year. No surprise in the sheer depth in this tunes sound, and the fact it accomplishes this so easily without resorting to a typical ‘dark dub’ sound makes it all the more unique. This one has been in my own record bag for quite some time and has yet to come out.

Side B, “Putney Says,” is a collaborative effort between another San Francisco native in DJG with Canada’s XI, similar to the a-side some very deep introspective vibes on this but what definitely feels like a much darker aesthetic than the flip-side. As the vocal cuts in the song proclaim you’ve “got to have soul,” and this tune definitely has it. Most certainly not a headbanger but the bass in this tune is massive enough to ensure anything with a soul on the dancefloor is keyed into the groove.

This one has been on on vinyl for a moment and the digital version of this became available Monday, be sure to grab your copy now!

Eprom – Never with Falty DL remix on Surefire 001 (Free DL!)

Surefire Productions from San Francisco has been running a premier booking agency for some time (since 2006 I think), a monthly for around a year now, and is now launching the third dimension: the Surefire Sound label.  How does Surefire set it off you might ask?  The debut release comes from San Francisco producer Eprom who has been all over the musical map, producing quality Glitch, Dubstep, and more. SFS001 is out on vinyl now with digital coming in about a month.

To promote the release Surefire put out a free download of the title track.  The b-side is a remix by Falty DL which is equally good.

My favorite tracks tend to be the ones that fail to fit into any of the neat categories that exist in music.  “Never” by Eprom blends elements from UK funky, Garage, Dubstep, and music that belongs on the Tron soundtrack to produce an absolute dancefloor killer with a driving 4×4 beat offset by syncopated snares and a wobbly midrange synth.  Whatever this music is, I love it.
